It was the last month of the school-year, and Eric had finished the testing phase of the different systems. He compiled everything to a single application and ran it on his desktop computer. He had a high-end PC with 8-core processor, 32 Gigabyte memory (RAM), high-end video card, and terabytes of hard disk storage. To make sure the program had all the resources available, he uninstalled every optional applications and services. His computer was a monster in terms of normal specification, but when he tested his newly developed program for the first time, it suddenly slowed down with a lot of lag.
He had incorporated a green task manager interface to monitor the internal activities of different processes and senses, including a video feed from the cameras. The computer resources were divided to balance the overall workload; 2 cores were allotted to the visual processor and one each to the other systems. Half of the computer's memory was dedicated as active RAM, while the rest were divided equally as cache RAMs for the different systems. Resources, however, could also be dynamically allocated depending on which system needed them most. All the necessary data, such as dictionary, voice files, phonemes, etc. were already stored on the hard drive to serve as reference for the program when loading discrete data into the memory.
Several minutes had passed and the program was online, as indicated on the task manager interface. The processes gained momentary activity but quickly ceased. Then Eric noticed it was the common sense processor that was performing constant activity, showing as 100 percent, and it continued for a while. Afterwards, all the activities were minimal as being reflected on various graphs of the program's interface.
He had an input textbox so he started typing....
"Hello." He sighted a little activity on the graphs. A text suddenly appeared on the reply box.
"Hello." A treble voice came out from the speakers, "Hello."
Eric chose treble voice because he did not want to decide the gender of his program, and treble voice could either be a young boy or a young girl, a sort of unisex being.
Again he typed, "How are you?" and the same thing happened.
"How are you?" with the same treble voice from the speakers.
And then he fiddled the keyboard with random keys, "hdfjfjdsjfjh," and observed how the program would respond to an unknown data. He saw a sudden activity, then it stopped... He had no reply.
Eric then tried out the sound recognition by talking to his program, "Hi." He noted an activity on the sound processor, indicating the program heard him.
A text appeared on the reply box, "Hi," with the sound from the speakers.
"Are you alive?" he asked disappointingly.
In the reply box, it displayed, "Are you alive." with the corresponding speech.
It seemed the program was just responding recognizable input, and it didn't make any sense to him. He leaned back against his chair and thought for a moment. Then he stared at the cameras on top of his 17" monitor. He moved sideways, disappearing from the view screen, and then he jumped suddenly in front of the cameras simultaneously saying the word, "Face." The program replied, "Face." He laughed, trying to make fun of his own self on the video feed, but then he did the same thing again, shouting, "Face". The program replied the same thing for the second time. He shrugged and sighed, and he felt a bit tired and stupid playing a peek-a-boo with his computer. He stood up to energize by stretching his body and went to the kitchen to get some coffee.
When he returned, he sat down in front of the computer. He took a sip of the hot, bitter coffee and set the mug down while staring at the cameras and the program said, "Face." Eric froze.
