Everyone was already fast asleep, but Hyun couldn't sleep. It's not hard to see why. Zombies growling and banging and apparently real? Yeah. That would do it.
"Hyun?"
Hyun glanced over, watching as Na-yeon made her way over nervously. She sat down beside Hyun, fidgeting with her colorful buttons nervously.
"I'm...uh, I'm sorry."
Hyun sighed and glanced over at the clock on the wall. "For what?"
"For- for everything," Na-yeon said nervously. "I almost- I almost murdered Gyeong-su for my own stupid, selfish needs. I didn't...I-I realize that I didn't want to do any of that. I was just jealous. Nobody ever took my side and-"
"Na-yeon," Hyun spoke softly, looking at her. "You should be apologizing to Gyeong-su instead."
"I can't," Na-yeon whispers quietly, almost squeaky. "He would not forgive me. He'd-"
Hyun put a hand on Na-yeon's shoulder, furrowing her brows. "It doesn't matter if he forgives you, Na-yeon. What matters is that you apologize for what you've done. You almost murdered him."
Na-yeon sighs reluctantly and nods. "Right, right."
Nothing much was said much after that. They sat in silence for a while. It wasn't uncomfortable, though. They could both relate someway. Na-yeon was a bitch, Hyun was a bitch, but both wanted to change somehow. Just didn't know how. Both probably had family issues.
"Hyun?"
"Hm?"
Hyun was currently picking at a scab on her knee, watching as blood started to drop out. After getting no response, Hyun looked over to Na-yeon in confusion. "Na-yeon?" Said girl was fidgeting rather anxiously with her colorful buttons on her sweater. She tapped her shoulder, causing the girl to flinch and look at Hyun.
"Uh," Na-yeon glanced around nervously. "You're...different."
Hyun didn't respond, looking down. "Zombie apocalypses change you."
Na-yeon sighs, nodding.
"Na-yeon. We don't hate you."
Na-yeon looked at Hyun, alarmed. She shook her head, slouching down. "That's a lie."
"You and Ji-min used to be so close," Hyun whispered quietly. "What happened?"
"Just some stupid fight," Na-yeon pulled her knees to her chest. "I don't wanna get into it."
"I understand," Hyun sighed, picking at her scab again. "We both have sisters. Tell me more about yours."
"Uh," Na-yeon looked up, wondering how to explain. "We're- we're twins, but...we've never exactly gotten along. Ever. We always argue and fight, though when we were younger...we were so close. Inseparable, even. Than as we got older..." She sighed. "It's stupid. She's...we're total opposites. I'm a bitch, and...well, she's the sweetest person you could ever meet. She's kind, caring, thinks about other people first...she's not–she doesn't belong in this new world. She's going to die."
Hyun put her arm around Na-yeon's shoulder, shaking her head. "No, no, that's...that's not true. She'll–she'll survive. She could still be alive."
"It's unlikely," Na-yeon mumbled, her eyes turning glassy with tears. "I really hope she is, though. She doesn't deserve any of this. Me, however..."
"Na-yeon, no." Hyun scolded lightly, "You don't deserve any of it either. You...okay, yes, you weren't exactly the nicest but...you knew when to keep secrets to yourself, when you went too far. Sure, you didn't have the best view of people on welfare, but...there's a reason, right? There always is."
Na-yeon shrugs, looking down. "My parents, uh...they...I wanted them..." She sighs. "They're always out, not caring what I do. It's like I'm invisible to them. I just wanted to make them proud for once. But...I was doing it all wrong."
"Na-yeon, I understand that you wanted your parents approval, but..." Hyun sighs, looking around. "Why was that–why did that include bullying people on welfare?"
"Because," Na-yeon hesitated for a moment, realizing there's only one real answer to that. "Because I'm rich, and...I thought that my parents would only care about rich people, not...not poor people."
Hyun nodded in understanding.
"What about yours?"
Hyun looked at Na-yeon, confused. "What?"
"What about your sister?" Na-yeon clarified. "What's she like?"
Hyun hummed in thought. "Well, she's older than me. She's–it's almost uncanny how alike we are. We're both bitches to whoever we feel like. However, I do know that my sister harbors a secret soft side to whoever she cares about."
"Like you?"
"Huh?"
Na-yeon giggles softly, catching Hyun off-guard. Na-yeon never sounded like that. She always tried to sound more grown-upish than a kid. "You care about people too."
Hyun furrows her brows, looking away. "Not really. I'm more of a stupid pessimist."
"Yes," Na-yeon nods, looking at Hyun. "However, you took the time to–to help me. To, uh...to understand me and...I feel like that helped a lot. So, why did you do it?"
Hyun knew where this was going. She was speechless, realizing that what Na-yeon says is indeed true. Hyun wasn't the best with showing her emotions, but to people she cared about...she'd do anything to protect them. She saw herself in Na-yeon, which is why she helped the younger girl. She almost killed Gyeong-su, yes, which was...absolutely horrifying...but everyone deserves a second chance, no?
Hyun let herself smile, realizing Na-yeon was right. Na-yeon let out another soft giggle, and Hyun brought the girl closer, laying her head head on her shoulder. Now that both girls felt safe, they could finally find some rest. Hyun looked around first, glancing at the others.
Ji-min was resting with Hyo-ryung, Wu-jin cuddled Joon-yeong, On-jo had her head on Cheong-san's shoulder, Nam-ra was alone, but Su-hyeok was close enough, Dae-su was with the boys, and Gyeong-su...why was he awake? Hyun sighed and nudged Na-yeon, pointing towards Gyeong-su.
Na-yeon sighed and walked slowly over to said boy. Hyun could only watch, wondering how this would go. Either he'd forgive her, or...yeah.
