We didn't find a store that sells mattresses, and we ran out of time to go look for more guns, but Carys and I found the exact store that we needed to renovate the commissary. A Home Depot.
We had a great time looting, actually. It was kinda fun going around and collecting what we needed while goofing around. There was so much stuff that we needed, that we actually had to use a bunch of sleds and ropes to tow it all back to the commissary. But once we got back, it was smooth sailing from there.
Once we got the power back up and running, we spent the rest of the day measuring, cutting, and welding the pieces of sheet steel to the frames of the glass doors and windows at the front entrance. We even got the security cameras outside working again. And by sunset, we had managed to get the last piece of steel welded into place. It was also pretty easy to fix the ventilation system's filters. And as for new melee weapons, Carys has a hand axe and I now have a machete.
This commissary is now truly our home. We have four walls, a roof, breathable air, food, water, and electricity.
Once we were sure that all the toxic particles in the air were gone, we both decided to take off our gas masks. Carys was shocked when she saw my face, and I was a bit nervous about seeing hers again. I don't know about her, but after we removed our masks, it felt so... surreal. It actually felt like I was speaking with a real person again after god knows how long. I offered her a hug and she eagerly accepted it. I'm telling you, she's a living angel. She's just so cute!
We got to talking about our interests and how our lives were before we woke up in this purgatory of permafrost. Apparently, Carys and I have a lot in common, but in terms of who has the more painful backstory, I was miles ahead of her.
If you have read this far, you already know everything that has happened to me ever since I arrived here, but there is more to it than that. Something that I forgot to mention is that the man and woman that I have been referring to as my parents aren't my actual parents. I was adopted. Supposedly, my real parents died in a massacre when I was eight years old. I don't remember them or the earliest years of my life because of a serious head injury that I sustained, resulting in brain damage that gave me retrograde amnesia and ADHD.
Edward and Amy Bersk were the ones who brought me to the hospital after they found me off on the side of the road somewhere. When the doctors couldn't identify who I was or have me tell them who my parents were, I was officially deemed an orphan. The Bersks took pity and adopted me with open hearts and arms. They were the people who gave me the name Grigor Fredrick Bersk. After that, I grew into the man that I am today. I had a good life.
Carys was born two years after me in Northern Wales, hence her Welsh name and British accent. Her mom, Bethany, died during childbirth, leaving only her father, Richard, to care for her. He and Carys moved to Copper 9 when she was six so they could find a better life. Aside from the cold weather and toxic atmosphere, she had a really nice childhood. But then one day, alarms started blaring all over the planet. For some reason, the core was on the verge of exploding. I guess Richard knew what was about to happen and decided to take a massive gamble to try and save his daughter. He grabbed Carys, put her into that prototype cryogenic storage unit, wrote a final message addressed to her, and died in his office.
As far as we know, we're the last living humans who were born on Earth. We're kind of like the last of our kind.
We have been through so much and have experienced such similar disasters, it's quite amazing, actually. We should both be long gone by now, but I guess the universe said otherwise.
I'm really happy to have her as my friend.
