Unfortunately the newfound intensity of his assignment kept Dazai from visiting Y/n again until nearly a week later. Of course, she had been seated at Mori's feet as usual when he'd officially received his title of executive but, loyal as ever to her master, they had not exchanged so much as a look let alone a word.

She seemed to be spending less and less time with the boss, Dazai assumed it was because of the training he was putting her through. In the quiet of the dimly lit hallway, he swiftly broke into her room once again. It was late, and he half expected to find Y/n already asleep. However, when he stepped into the room, it was to find her seated at her desk.

At the sound of him entering, Y/n looked up from her book. She didn't seem as surprised to see him as he had hoped, but the small bit of shock that did cross her visage was pleasing nonetheless.

"You really came back." she mused, marking her page and placing the book on the table in front of her.

"What are you reading?" Dazai asked, closing the door behind him.

She ignored his question.

"You should really be more careful. It's not safe for you to be here, Rin could come back at any moment."

"What can I say," Dazai responded, his tone teasing and confident, "I enjoy a life on the edge."

Her eye twitched and Dazai couldn't help but think she had almost rolled them at him. It only fueled his curiosity more, he wanted to see what was under that shell of hers.

"You're not going to listen to a word I say, are you?"

Dazai responded with his silence, confirming her question. They stayed, her in her chair and he standing by the door, eyes locked on one another.

"Fine." she at last relented, getting to her feet, "At least re-lock the door in case he tries to come."

With a victorious grin, Dazai complied with her request. When he turned back to face Y/n, it was to find her seated on the floor, the cotton of her nightdress pooling around her knees.

"What are you doing?" he asked, hesitant to approach.

"There aren't enough chairs for both of us, and I'm assuming you came to talk." she replied as if it were something he should have known, as if it was the most obvious answer in all the world.

Dazai nodded, walking over to where Y/n sat and lowering himself to the floor across from her. She folded her hands in her lap politely.

"How's your training going?" he asked, the same question he had begun their last conversation with.

Y/n regarded him carefully for a moment. Dazai could see the conflict behind her eyes as she tried to figure out his motivations, his end goals.

"Its okay." she answered, "Not like anything I've ever done before, but I'm getting the hang of it. I'm assuming your first mission went well? Rin did decide to make you an executive after all."

Dazai nodded.

"I mean, there were one or two hiccups. An eldritch god of chaos and a dead man brought to life, a betrayal or two."

"Thoroughly entertaining." Y/n mused.

They fell into an uneasy silence, not sure how to interact. It had been a long time since either had tried to make a friend.

"What-" they both began to say at the same time, stopping once each heard the other's voice.

"You go." Y/n offered, opening the palm of one of her hands as if handing Dazai a physical object rather than control of the conversation.
