Only now did Odasaku turn around and the trio walked towards one another, stopping when Gide was about ten feet from Odasaku, Y/n standing about two feet off to his side.

"I can get you a discount with an undertaker I know if you want?" Odasaku offered.

"There is no need." Gide replied with a smile, "I just found the one we were looking for."

Gide raised his gun and Oda moved to dodge but froze halfway through the motion. Y/n knew of his ability of course, had heard about it from Dazai. She had never seen it in action and these two men appeared, to her, to be at a stalemate.

Oda's eyes grew wider by the second, his whole body growing tense.

"What?" he said, his voice little more than an alarmed whisper.

"What's the matter?" Gide teased, smirking at his opponent, "I haven't even fired a single round.

"What did you do?!" Oda yelled back, raising his own gun now.

"I just saw a future where you would dodge to the right. Therefore, I adjusted my aim but you saw that future, so you adjusted as well which I also saw. The ability to see a few seconds into the future if you are to be in any danger... I can do what you can do. The predictive ability we have is omnipotent. You are the only one who can kill me and end this war. If you are one of the Port Mafia, killing me, the enemy leader, must be your greatest desire."

Odasaku shook his head, lowering his arm.

"No thanks." he said simply, "I'm only here to help one of my own."

"What?" Gide replied in obvious confusion, "You're not one of the mafia?"

"There are different types in the mafia." Y/n interjected, "I kill, he doesn't. We still do what we can to support the same cause."

"Guns are tools for murder!" Gide exclaimed, he was getting angry now. "This, is a war zone!"

"I'm not interested in fighting." Odasaku firmly responded, "What I'm interested in is living."

"There is nothing more important in life than death!"

The pair fell silent, appearing to have reentered a battle betwixt their abilities. Y/n watched her companion closely, trying her best to read him in order that if the need should arise, she would be able to come to his aid. Hoping that Gide was too focused on Oda to account for her in his ability.

With barley any notice, Odasaku ducked into a front roll, Gide shooting at him as he approached. From where he was crouched on the ground, he drew his gun once again, aiming it at the enemy. Y/n walked over to where the pair now stood.

"Good, that's how it should be..." Gide was victoriously announcing before letting out a sudden "What?" and jumping back from Odasaku as he shot at his feet.

"Are you refusing to fight me then?" he asked once he had regained his balence.

"There is a reason I don't kill. Look elsewhere."

"I could do it." Y/n said, raising a hand.

"No, only he can." Gide responded, shaking his head, "So why wont you?! My subordinates and I have been wandering the whole world like ghosts, looking for a place worthy of our deaths. You are our only wish. Fight me! If you ref-"

"The reason I can't do as you wish is because I have a dream." Oda interrupted and Y/n looked over at him in interest. She had asked about his vow before, it had been the first thing she had ever really said to him even. He had always refused to give an answer. "Some day when I can quit the Port Mafia and become a free man, I want to sit down at a desk in a room where I can see the sea and I want to become a writer. I want to throw the gun aside, and only have pen and paper. One man told me that to write a story is to write a person. A man who takes lives cannot write about them. That is why I wont kill."

"And that's the reason why you refuse to enter our battle? That's your answer?"

"That's right."

Y/n saw Gide's face steel suddenly and turned her head to Oda who began to throw himself to the side in the direction of Akutagawa. Without a second thought, she threw herself towards him, pushing Oda out of the line of fire and receiving six shots to the chest. She fell to the floor in a puddle of blood and Oda screamed out her name, reaching a hand out to her.

He stayed that way for a second, on the ground where Y/n had shoved him, arm outstretched, eyes wide.

"A shame." Gide stated as Oda turned to face him at last.

"You didn't have to do that." Oda trembled as he spoke.

He didn't know Y/n well, but he knew her. She was young and wild, like Dazai. Those two were close, shared a deep bond. Anyone could see it. He dreaded to think what her sudden loss would do to his young friend, especially since he was the one who had asked her to be there. Especially since it was his own subordinate and treasured friend she had died to protect.

"That pain you feel at that girl's death is a privilege of the living. It is something we lost long ago." Gide approached the place Oda was still crouched, approached the bleeding Y/n, "We are already dead. We are just soulless husks being controlled by ghosts."

"You're not dead, but she is. Her blood is on your hands. I don't know what happened to you in the past, but you can still think about how you want to die and the sort of person you wish to be before that."

Gide cocked his gun, placing it flush against Odasaku's forehead.

"Why won't you understand?!" he yelled, "You are the only... You will not kill me, you don't understand my wish." Gide said lowly and tucked his gun back under his cape, "And I won't kill you right now, because you are the only one who can guide us to the battlefield of purification." He turned and began to walk away, leaving Oda still crouched by Y/n's body, "I will make you understand who we really are. Then, you will understand that, between the two of us, there can only be one. You should look forward to it."

A grey van pulled up and Gide opened the door, getting inside. As soon as it was closed behind him, the van sped off. Oda sat there for a moment longer, looking at the space it had once occupied, wondering how he was going to explain all this to Dazai. A sudden gasp from behind him caused Oda to turn around.

He was equal parts amazed and alarmed to see Y/n, sitting up. She spat the bullets into her hand, shaking her head in disgust as she threw them off to the side.

"How..." Oda began to ask, but found himself at a loss for words.

"It's my ability." Y/n shrugged, refusing to meet his eyes, "I can't die. The man who wont kill and the girl who can't die, what a pair we make."

"A useful skill." he said in response, "I see why the Boss is so fond of you... Are you okay?"

Y/n didn't answer, still refusing to meet his gaze. Oda sighed.

"Y/n, do you need anything?" he tried again.

"I... Oda, I'm so sorry." at last she turned to look at him and her eyes were full of tears, "I really, really, tried. This is the only future I could find where everything ends up mostly okay and... I am so sorry."

"What do you mean?" he asked, eyeing the girl with concern.

"I can't tell you."

"Try?"

She sighed, looking to the side.

"My ability, when I die I can see all the possible futures and pick which one I wake up in. It's... it's like your ability on steroids except I have to die for it to happen. Even then, I can only see so far though, a few hours, a day tops. Even if I tell you what will happen, it wont change anything, it's all set in stone. This was our best option and even then..."

"What is it?"

"None of this will end well for anyone."
