"You really didn't have to do this," June said scoping out the country club as it quickly approached."Anything for you Joy," Conrad responded, slowly driving up to the looming building.
"You just wanted to get away from your mom, didn't you?"
"Oh not at all, I absolutely love sitting there while she fixates on every little detail of my face."
"Yeah. I didn't even notice that zit on your chin..."
"Don't even start with me right now--"
"Hey, thanks for taking me...I don't think I would have survived my mom breaking down into tears one more time today," June said, as the car slowed to a stop.
"Wow, never pegged Steph as one to get emotional over deb ball shit," Conrad said, putting the car in park and turning to look at June.
"Among other things," June trailed off, twisting in her seat to face Conrad, "Tell me Connie, why are you such an avid hater of the debutante culture?"
"You look pretty," He said, sparing a glance at her outfit.
June was wearing a dark blue crossover skirt, with golden buttons cascading down the top of her left leg. Shinched at the waist, she had a cream-colored shirt tucked into the skirt. Her coat, matching the skirt, was left open, revealing the shirt underneath, and giving room to show off the necklace daintily hanging off her neck. She had forgone the hat, having some standards to uphold.
"Don't change the subject Conrad," She laughed, glancing over at the building in front of them.
"Don't worry about it. Everyone in this town loves you, and you have nothing to prove to any of those girls there. Just be you, and everyone is going to love you just as much as I do," He said, reaching over to gently push a piece of hair behind her ear that had fallen into her face.
"Aw Connie, you love me," June teased, drawing out the love.
"I try to give you compliments and you ruin it," Conrad said, causing them both to break out into laughter.
A sudden knock on the passenger side window made the pair jump, Conrad retracting his thumb that was still resting on June's cheek.
"June!" A muffled shout came through the window, "Are you coming or not?"
June looked behind her to find a gleeful-looking Nicole. She turned back to Conrad, giving him a look of regret before quickly painting a smile on her face. Conrad stifled a laugh, watching as she slowly swiveled back around.
"Yeah, so excited to be doing this!" She said, reaching to unlock the door.
Nicole took a step back, her hat slightly flopping in the wind. Conrad watched the girl slowly get out of the car, her Mary Jane heels hitting the pavement with a thud.
