This chapter will contain most of the aftermath from the last chapter. To indicate a new 'plot' for the chapter I'll signal a line for those who do not wish to read it. Sorry guys and thanks for reading this far.
I was awoken by the sound of my bedroom door opening and closing. Probably Minho checking in on me. I look at the time and notice that it is way past dinner time and the sun has set and the moon has made an appearance. I lay in bed for a time before deciding that I was starving and needed to see my best friend.
I go to Fry's kitchen first where he has a plate of food waiting for me; Fried Rice and soy sauce. I smile at him in thanks and make my way to the tables where I eat in silence with the occasional conversation from Frypan to keep us both company. I'm pretty sure we all needed someone to talk to after today's events. One thing I also knew is that tomorrow Alby will call a gathering where I will have to sit in Newt's spot while he recovers.
As I make my way back to the homestead, I feel a pair of strong arms embrace me and I melt into them, knowing exactly who they belong to. I smile and his scent fills my nose.
"Hey Minho." I say. I give a frown at today's events and my lack of checking in on him. After all, I did leave him for half an hour with his dying best friend. "You OK?" I ask him and he stops to walk around to look at me.
"Hey. I'll be OK, just a little shook right now. You?" He asks me. I shrug.
"Most of the same." I reply and he nods before looking down sadly. "I'm gonna go see him now. You wanna join me?" I ask him. He nods and we make our way over to the homestead. We walk in to the med tent and see Newt, sleeping peacefully and we frown but stand at the entrance like two hesitant family members. All we wanted to know was that he was still breathing and that's all we cared about for now.
The next day as Minho and I prepare for another dreaded day in the maze we see Alby making his way over. More like I see Alby walking over. I nudge Minho in the ribs while he stretches and point in Alby's direction. He stands up straight. He seems worried.
"Sup Alby?" I ask, trying to sound a little happier, trying to push yesterday from my thoughts. I was trying but it was hard. He looks upset and I know why.
"Gathering. Now!" He orders and I know what it will be about. To make it even better, it will be with the entire glade except for Jeff and Clint who will keep an eye on Newt until he wakes up.
We head to the gathering room to see all the keepers and the rest of the gladers looking a little more dim than they all usually do. I take a seat in Newt's usual spot and Minho sits behind me. The entire seating arrangement feels wrong but it's necessary. Alby begins to speak.
"OK. Everyone I am sure you are all aware of the events that happened yesterday. If you aren't then I am sure that Katie fill you in." Alby explains. I look at him wide eyed, not aware this was the deal.
"Huh?" I question and he just motions for me to stand up.
"Well as you all know Newt is no longer a runner. Yesterday Newt tried to commit suicide." I explain but before I finish, the room erupts into chatter. "QUIET!" I yell and everyone stops talking all at once. Silence holds the floor. "Yesterday when I was running the maze," I continue." I came across Newt lying on the ground after, what looks like, a jump from the maze wall. As a result, a large group of gladers, some not runners, entered the maze to save him. For a while we did lose him but he is now in the homestead recovering." I finish. I look at Alby signalling I was done and he takes the floor again. Just as he is about to dismiss the gathering, Jeff runs in.
"Newt's awake." He he exhales. Our heads snap up but Jeff's eyes connect with mine.
"He wants to see Katie."
It has officially been two weeks since we almost lost Newt. And he hasn't been the same since. After the fall, he sustained injuries to his head where a large gash was present which is still taking a while to heal. His leg was broken in several place which made his ACL to also tear which has left him with an eternal limp and his arm was slightly fractured. He looks broken, physically and mentally. And I can't help but feel responsible.
As I make my way to the map room after running the maze for the day I see him standing by the doors. I knew he enjoyed running the maze and assisting in finding a way out but everyone, including him, agreed that it would be a good idea to not let him back after these events. I decide to walk over and stand next to him where we both slide against the wall doors and he leans his head on my shoulder. I rest my head on his and he begins to cry.
"Newt, it's OK. You're OK." I assure him but all he does is hug and me and I do nothing but whisper reassurances into his ear and rub his back. I knew he didn't need anyone to say that he needed to move on and forget it because I knew this would never be forgotten about. That this will always haunt him to his last days. So I continued to tell him that I'd always be here for him and that he can come to me for anything. That no matter what he thinks, what he wants to do, I will always be there to help him through his rough patches and be proud when he feels he's on top of the world.
-------
Soon the maze doors begin to close and Newt, Minho and I have made our way to the kitchen where Fry has served up dinner, nothing special; baked potatoes and bacon. It was one of my favourite dishes. The cheese and the bacon especially.
The glade carried on as usual. Gally quit his runner apprenticeship and instead joined his previous gang: the builders of whom happily made him their keeper as he once was. He was more suited to that job anyway. Minho and I along with Ben and a few others continued to run the maze and find a way out. A big 'screw you' to WCKD, the people who put us here in the first place.
