TUTORING

It was almost the end of our last first semester. I was sailing through the year and was in the running for valedictorian so when I was called into my math teacher's office I was more than confused.

"You wanted to see me, Mr Robins?" I said as I knocked on the door. He could see I was nervous.

"Yeah come in, sit down." He said and I took a seat in his office. "Don't worry you're not in trouble," he laughed and I chuckled.

"Okay good," I sighed in relief.

"Julia I have a favour to ask," he started and I raised an eyebrow. "As you know, my class is compulsory and in order to graduate you must pass," he said but I couldn't think about how this concerned me. I just nodded along.

"I'm sure you know Luke,"

"Well yes," I said a little confused. Luke was the boy who sat behind me in math. He was the class clown. He often derailed the lessons and distracted the entire class. He was funny but a little annoying.

I didn't dislike him. In fact, I thought he was quite attractive. I just didn't want to have to spend my spare time with him.

"He's failing. He's in desperate need of a tutor and I was hoping you could help?" He asked and I sighed deeply. I wasn't sure if I had the time to start tutoring a classmate. And I didn't want to do it for free either. "It will only be until February." He said as if that was any better.

"Oh Sir, I'm not sure if I can make that work," I told him and he looked disappointed.

"What if I give you extra credit for it?" He asked and I became more interested.

"Hmm throw in no homework for the duration of our tutoring and it's a deal," I negotiated and he smiled.

"Alright. Just promise you get started ASAP." He said and I agreed. "Thank you," he said and I got up to leave. Part of me felt like I should have been gaining more from this arrangement.

The next day, Luke approached me in the halls to talk about the tutoring situation.

"Hey Julia," he started as I put my books away in my locker. I looked at him and smiled politely. "Mr robins told me to find you to talk about tutoring," he said as I continued to put my stuff away. "So can you help me?" He asked and I closed my locker.

"I mean I could help. But do you really want my help or are you just asking because you were told to?" I asked and he scratched the back of his head.

"Look I know I mess around in class but I can't fail, my dream college is riding in this," he said and I tried to hide a smile. I had never seen him be serious about anything before. It was cute. I didn't know why I found it cute but I did.

"Alright I'll work you into my schedule," I told him and he smiled with relief. I couldn't believe I was swooning over him.

"Is tomorrow after school at my house okay for you?" He asked and I nodded. "I'll send you my address. Thank you, Julia!" He smiled and kissed my cheek before running away.

For the rest of the evening, he was basically all I could think about. I wasn't sure why I couldn't stop thinking about him. I was never interested in dating or anything like that because school and extracurricular activities took over my life. I was too busy for that.

When I arrived at his house I was shocked. It was a beautiful farmhouse. Insanely picturesque. Flowers covered his front yard and there was gravel on the driveway.

Luke opened the door as I parked my car in the drive. Cars were missing but I figured they were in the garage.

"Hey," Luke smiled after opening my car door for me. The gesture didn't go unappreciated.
