I loved going home for Christmas. University was a drag so seeing my family always made me happy. What didn't make me happy was going to the cabin we rented with the Bennetts. CJ and I had never really gotten along. Especially when we were younger.

It was more than not getting along. We hated each other. We were always at each other's throats. He was a cunt. And he probably felt the same way about me.

Although our rivalry ran deep, our families teased us about liking each other. Our mothers would jokingly plan out our wedding just to get on our nerves. I loved his mother but it was so annoying.

I would notice his stares when we were at the pool or whenever I made an effort in my appearance but I never really paid attention to that.

It was probably gonna be a whole week of us teasing each other and going back and forth like we usually did. He always knew how to get under my skin.

I arrived at the cabin with my parents and made it my mission to just avoid him. I was too old to be arguing with him. Especially since every disagreement we had was about something trivial. It wouldn't be hard to ignore him anyway. The cabin was big enough to do so.

His mother welcomed us in hastily since it was cold out and we greeted each other. I hadn't seen them in a while since I was away at university.

CJ emerged from the sitting room and it took everything within me to not roll my eyes. He had this smug smile on his face. Like he knew the sight of him pissed me off.

"Hi Tara," he smiled and waved at me. His smile was annoyingly sweet all of a sudden. He was wearing a T-shirt that showed off his muscles. I looked at him closely and I couldn't figure what about him had changed.

"Hi," I quickly simply responded when I realised I was staring. His smile became even more smug. He was suddenly hot and I was attracted to him. He couldn't know that I thought that, and I hated myself for thinking it.

I looked back at his mother and she led me up to my room. I decided I'd unpack before dinner. I began putting my clothes away when I heard a soft knock on my door. I exhaled and walked over to the door to open it. Standing on the other side was Cj. I sighed deeply and rolled my eyes as he walked past me. He chuckled and sat down on my bed.

"What do you want?" I asked him and when he stopped laughing.

"I just wanted to welcome you," he smiled charmingly. Why did he have to be so charming?

"You already said hi," I told him as I held my door open; signalling that I wanted him to leave. I stood confidently and he clenched his jaw. "I guess you can get going now," I smiled smugly and he got up. Everything was a competition with us and I was already winning this verbal exchange.

"You look pretty when you're annoyed," he said and stood in front of me. I looked up at him and I couldn't maintain eye contact. He licked his lips as he looked down at me. I felt my cheeks heat up and I felt myself getting embarrassed. Why was he being nice? Was it a way to get into my head?

"What is your problem?" I sighed and rolled my eyes.

"Don't you think we're too old for this now? Why can't we be friends?" He asked and I crossed my arms. He could tell I wasn't taking him seriously. "I'm not joking," he said and I just wanted to get rid of him.

"Alright, we can be friends if it means you'll leave me alone," I said. His smile grew.

"Great, also dinner's ready," he said still looking down at me. I forced a smile.

"Okay, I'll be down in five," I told him and he was on his way. I shut the door behind me and exhaled deeply. I couldn't believe after a 20 year long feud, we were finally 'friends'. Well civil.
