Reader's POV

"So, what happened back there?"

"What?"

"Back at the store, what happened to trigger that? You don't have to answer, but you did say you wanted to talk. So let's talk."

"Oh, right. I don't really know what happened. It was like a suffocating feeling that's been following me the whole day, but in that store it was killing me. I was so scared I couldn't move. I don't really know what it was."

"Do you still feel that way?"

"A little, but it's not all that bad now."

"What changed?"

"I guess it got calmer after you showed up."

"Huh."

"Huh what?"

"Oh, nothing. Just thinking."

"Alright.. so, how long are you on leave for?"

"Ah, let's see.. 6 more days, I think. But I can leave the Fortress whenever I want."

"Then why take leave?"

"I can't leave for extended periods of time without taking leave formally."

"I see. Why did you take leave in the first place? What are you here for?"

"Vacation, I guess. My leave started at that ball we met at a week ago. And I took two weeks of leave. Just needed some time off."

"I see.. so-"

Before I could ask another question, I was interrupted by a loud knock at the door.

"Excuse me, I'll go get that." I stood up from my seat. Upon opening the door, I notice a small Melusine in front of me.

"Hello, my name is Liath! Is the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide here?"

"Oh, yeah, hang on."

I turned around and called out for him.
"Wriothesley, it's for you!"

When I noticed him coming, I turned back around. Liath looked confused at something and seemed to realize I noticed, for she started whispering "You called him by his name.."

"Hm? How can I help?" Wriothesley asked her. It seemed he did not notice what she said.

"Monsieur Neuvillette would like to see you immediately! He's in his office at the Palais Mermonia."

Wriothesley's expressions immediately changed, he seemed upset at the news he received.

"Sorry, I've gotta get going. Thank you for the tea, I enjoyed it." He didn't even look at me as he spoke. His words seems ingenuine. Bland.  He started walking off before I even got a reply out.

"See you, then.."

Liath and I both stared at him, before Liath put one of her little hands on my back.

"Are you two friends? He seemed.. off just now. I don't know him well but friends aren't usually that bland, right?"

"I don't know anymore."

Liath turned away and left, and as such left me to my thoughts. I wondered. Were we friends? Was it my place to be worried about him? I decided it wasn't, and turned around, going back inside.

The first thing I noticed was the missing teacup I set out. I wonder if Wriothesley put it in the sink already. I decided it was probably the least of my worries, and instead headed back to my room. I needed more sleep.
