The cold, midnight air blew my hair across my face. Standing on the balcony, I watched a family playing in their bedroom because their shadows were obvious through the curtains. I looked up at the dark and empty sky and closed my eyes asking the same question over and over again in my mind. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I remembered the tragic incident that caused my parents' lives.

14 years have passed since that tragic incident, but the memory was still fresh in my mind, like it had just taken place yesterday. I was just 2 years old, then. Perfectly clueless of what happened.

It is natural for a child to look for their parents as they grow up. But I grew up with none. I grew up with my Aunt who took me in when no one in my family volunteered to take care of me. She was like my second mom. Though, my Aunt didn't have any children. Maybe, it's the reason why she got me. But whatever the reason may be, I'm thankful I have her.

"Avery? Honey? Where are you?" I heard my Aunt, Liz, call from the inside. I quickly wiped my tears with the back of my hand and straightened myself before she could see me crying. As if on cue, I heard my Aunt open the sliding door that led to the balcony and closed it as she entered.

"Ohh, there you are. I've been looking everywhere for you," she exclaimed as she walked towards me, worry toning her voice. I turned and gave her a smile.

"Why are you up here, dear? Is something wrong?" she asked.

"No, everything's fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just, you know, freeing my mind of stress from all the schoolwork."

"Ohh, honey, I told you, I think you should just focus on your studies. You don't have to work anymore," she reasoned.

"No, Liz, it's alright. Besides, I want to have experience, so that if, someday when I start to work, I won't have a hard time coping up," I replied, smiling. "And I also want to help you pay for my college tuition fee." Liz smiled and hugged me tight.

"You're really an angel," she told me, still hugging me tight. I buried my face in her shoulder and hugged her back. Then she slowly let go and held my face.

"Go to sleep already, ok?" she stated, as she planted a kiss on my forehead. I nodded and gave her a small smile, then she turned and left. I took one last glance at the family, smiling sadly, before I left.

I woke up with the sound of my alarm clock beeping incessantly. I groaned before I goggily sat up then I quickly showered and put on a simple tee and skinny jeans. I'm not really a fan of make-up, so I decided on my strawberry lip-shiner, a bit of mascara and the usual foundation. I grabbed my stuff and ran out of my room. As I reached downstairs, I threw my bag beside the door and went to the kitchen.

I found Liz sitting at the dining table, drinking coffee while reading the morning news in the paper. Usual routine. I smiled to myself.

She looked up and smiled. "Early bird," she stated, chuckling. I laughed a little and gave her a kiss on the cheek before I headed to the fridge to grab some milk.
