Jasper's nose was sniffing around the edges of the door, access to the outside. The cage door was set wide open, it was a three foot drop to the gravel driveway. He easily slinked out of the cage and he grimaced at his faulty back leg.
The three human forms around him still gave him a wide berth and he was able to look around at the scenery. The driveway disappeared into a wide expanse of forest but to the right side was a large field and in the distance he saw a grouping of buildings.
He peered back at the SUV, expecting nothing spectacular but almost did a double take at the large building. No wonder it smelled so much like wolves, a pack house. His tail drooped, but besides that no clue was given to the assault of memories plaguing the deep recesses of the human side of his brain.
"Hey... can you shift back for us, honey? You know it's safe, right?" Sebastian had approached a couple steps forward.
Jasper's snout scrunched in disgust from the wolf and pain from the human. The wolf was made lycan, he was in control and he managed his form better than the human. The human however, was pained, and knew that shifting back would not be an easy task, not that the wolf still wouldn't be in control once he was finally human again. Jasper wasn't even sure he wanted to shift back, he was uncomfortable with his human body, it displayed too much of the torturous years he had been through. He would not be able to shift, at least, not without a little help.
"Let's go see the alpha."
—
They led Jasper across the well tamed field to a congregation of buildings. Apparently, the building back at the driveway was not where the alpha resided, they were going to check in with the alpha's mate first to see if she knew where he was first. Jasper knew it was a plan to show him around the pack, if they needed to find the alpha they could have easily mind linked him first from where they arrived.
Jasper didn't mind in the least however, the three men around him could see how his ears perked up at every new thing they passed and how he viewed things so cautiously at first but grew more confident as he adjusted to his surroundings.
Watching him as they passed by other people was the most interesting, his hackles would raise in alarm, but then he'd shrink, almost pull back, and look at them with a new found interest. Sebastian and Matheo pointed out random buildings and training spots, obviously this was a place of much nostalgia for them.
It was there that Sebastian and Matheo left them near some sparring rings near an outcropping surrounded by trees. They would be going to the alphas house to talk to the luna and find the alpha. Jasper thought that Sebastian wanted him to spend some alone time with Liam, whom he could trust the most not to be able to hurt him. He wanted them all to form strong bonds together, he could sense it.
Jasper let his wolf relax some in the warm sun peeking in through the canopy of trees. Liam sat on the rock structure looking over the five sparring circles. Jasper sniffed around and observed the flora and fauna. However, his peace was soon interrupted by a sharp gasp from Liam.
Jasper snapped his head up, first checking Liam then to where his gaze was resting. A growl erupted from a black wolf with orange eyes in the shadows of the nearby trees. Jasper stood at alarm and froze, memories of the wolves and humans alike he had killed filling his mind.
The snapping of twigs got him moving, he thought he had lost his fight but he would not risk his human mate, he would kill if it meant his safety. He backed up against the rock, not wanting for a second to take his eyes off of the approaching wolf. This changed when he heard pebbles move from above, he quickly gave Liam a look to stay still with a small warning growl. Distracted, the black wolf rushed forward.
Jasper had just enough time to react to meet the teeth of the wolf with a snap of his own. Claws dug into his side, but he had felt worse before. He shifted his weight and dug harder into the wolf's shoulder, where his jaws had taken purchase.
This wolf, this rouge, would be an easy kill to his years of training. But, the wolf easily fought back, it was not the mark of a rogue to know much strategy and how to fight but Jasper fought back and fought hard. It was a flurry of fur and teeth. Just when he had the wolf pinned, ready to take the kill, a roar erupted from the forest. That gave the wolf below him just the opportunity to rip into his stomach, and bite down hard on his side, grazing his ribs with its teeth.
More growls were hurled their way and suddenly the wolf was torn off of him by an equally black wolf but this time with deep red eyes. An alpha.
Jasper was feeling aggravated from constant injury, but he still felt defensive and so he rose to his feet and recoiled from the alpha wolf, even if he had just saved Jasper, he was still ready for a fight.
Foolishly, Liam enveloped him in a hug, surprising Jasper and wrapping his arms around his shoulders. Jasper held back from lashing out and accidently giving Liam a tooth shaped scar.
Looking at his face, Jasper felt thankful for a mate like Liam, he looked worried, like he was sure Sebastian would be, overly so, but he also had a look of confidence and reassurance, everything would be okay.
