Blue eyes woke him.
Jasper had been given his own room away from his mates, he assumed it was so he could have space, but at this point it felt like a distance was placed between him and his mates.
He remembered all of the eyes of the people he had killed. Young, old. Man, woman, child. Today, like any other day, their eyes would wake him. Eyes that would not open again.
Jasper rose from the bed with a start, not wanting to continue staring into the tunnel of eyes the darkness of the ceiling had made. His hip ached with the sudden movement, it would ache anyway, but this was a sharper pain.
He bit through it and threw his legs over the side of the bed. He grabbed his cane, the metal handle cold and shiny in the light peeking in from the sliding door. It was through this door he made his exit.
The frost on the grass drenched his knit socks. He bent down to take them off but was too exhausted and physically drained after just one. He stuffed the piece of fabric in his pants pocket and continued on his way towards his destination.
That night they had burned the body of the woman Jasper killed. The woman from his past, the one who revealed some things to his very curious mates. Questions that he did not want to be asked. The following day they moved him to Liam's apartment, where they were staying now.
As he entered the woods of the trees he could feel some of his anxiety leave him. When he had been sent on his missions to kill, it hasn't always been terrible. He and Kaan always felt more at home in the trees, more alive. The animal always approved of its natural state. But they always returned. They knew they would be met with chains and cages, but they returned anyway.
"You know you don't have to sneak out, right?" Jasper turned to look as Sebastian approached him. He had sensed him some time ago, due to the mate bond. Either way he would have sensed him, Jasper knew how to watch his back. "You're not a prisoner here."
A silent sigh escapes his lips, and he turns back around and continues walking.
Bold of you to assume I was sneaking. If I wanted to leave without a trace I would.
"Jasper?"
He titled his head to show he was listening.
"You know you're beautiful, right?" There was a vulnerability in Sebastian's voice.
Jasper all but stopped. He felt his cheeks flame a little as he shook his head in little movements, too scared to respond, too scared to look at him.
"Well, you are."
Sebastian sounded so sure. But how could he believe him? He was damaged, he was a killer, he was-
"Let's sit here." Sebastian had walked just ahead of him and sat down on an uncomfortably cold bench, not that any would be warm in this weather.
For a while, they sat in silence, watching and taking in the nature around them. Maybe it would begin to snow.
"Jasper, I know we haven't been the best mates. And it really worries me. I know it's a lot to ask, and you're allowed to say n-no. But if you know you can rely on me, rely on us. We... we want you to be ours. We want our bond strengthened, will you mark us?"
Ahhh. Another tie to these people, this place, while there is so much to do. Jasper didn't look at Sebastian, didn't acknowledge him.
"I won't mark you back un-"
Jasper stopped Sebastian from rambling by placing a kiss on his cheek, causing a blush to grace both their faces. Jasper stood and motioned for them to walk back the way they came with his head. When Sebastian stood Jasper grabbed his hand.
If Jasper allowed Sebastian to mark him, there would be no leaving. If only he marked Sebastian, he could break the bond on his end and leave if he wanted to.
But he didn't want to. Maybe they could help him.
There was always something new, something that scared him. Despite the fear he lived in in his past, it was predictable and controlled. He was controlled. Here, out in the world, there were too many factors. Jasper can't get a good read on people, he spent most of his years learning to read his tormentors and mastered that, but, these people didn't want to hurt him. Somehow, that is scarier.
When the two of them made it back to the apartment, they found Liam sitting up in bed, reading. A nervous smile graced his face.
"You're back, glad to see you both safe. Did you have a good time?"
Sebastian shrugged, pulling off his jacket. "We missed you, Li. But it was beautiful. Would you join us Jasper?" Sebastian whispered the last sentence and barely motioned toward the bed.
Jasper gave a curt nod and slipped off his own cold shirt. He was turned slightly away and he could practically feel them trying to avoid looking so closely at his scared body, trying not to make him uncomfortable.
He sighed before turning to the bed, depositing his cane by the bedpost closest to him, and slipping under the covers, Liam and Sebastian stayed to the other side. They obviously did not want to make him feel uneasy but the more they seemed to avoid contact with him the more alienated he felt. Taking a small leap he slowly scooted his way towards them.
After several minutes he pressed his back to Liam's. He didn't react besides pressing back softly for a moment, almost as if to say I'm here. He was surprised by the hissing noise that met his ears when he tried pushing his feet towards theirs. He jerked away, concerned by the unfamiliar noise.
Liam's sleepy voice croaked out "I'm sorry! I'm sorry, it's just, it surprised me, your feet are really wet and cold. You can move back if you want. I don't mind, let's warm you up."
It was then that Jasper remembered the last remaining sock that still adorned his foot and the wet one creating a cold spot in his pajama pocket.
He sat up and looked towards Liam and Sebastian who smiled up at him but their smiles soon turned to frowns when they noticed the frustration on his face.
"What's wrong Jasper?"
Jasper ignored them and settled for gently pulling back the covers and trying to pull his covered foot forward. His hip protested and he tried biting his lip but a whisper of air let itself out.
"Stop." Jasper stopped forcing his leg when the hand met his shoulder. Sebastian kneeled on the side of the bed he had chosen to occupy and looked him in the eyes. "If you need help with something, or want to tell us something, please try to communicate that to us. We don't want you pushing yourself or hurting yourself further with something we can help you with." Sebastian grasped his ankle gently with his hand and pulled the sock off with his other one. "We don't know of your abilities, yet, but we do keep pads of paper around if you'd like to write or draw, or phones if you'd like to type. You can always point out things too. We just want to help you, Jasper."
Jasper surprised him again that night, he pressed his mouth to Sebastian's, for a kiss.
