Vincent tapped on the wheel of the car. It was a long, long drive back to San Diego, plenty to talk about, but Vincent didn't seem like he wanted to talk.
I looked in the back and saw Niko spinning a pistol on her finger. Spin, spin, spin.
This is what she did when she was bored, didn't matter if the gun was loaded, she didn't care.
"Would you cut that out Niko? You're gonna shoot yourself in your foot." I said in a harsh tone.
"No can do, trying to see how many spins I can get before it falls off my finger, I'm up to thirty, so far." She said, smiling.
"Niko, quit it before you get someone killed!" Vincent barked.
"Christ, neither of you are any fun." Niko complained, begrudgingly putting the gun away.
"Come on, we just destroyed the biggest Nazi lab in Nevada! Aren't you two happy?" Niko asked, poking her head between the driver and passenger seat. "No?"
"We are happy Niko, just... it's been a lot." Vincent said, just trying to end the conversation.
Niko looked at Vincent's face, his expression, his eyes.
"What did you see in there?" Niko inquired as she finally caught on, realizing Vincent must have seen something, something he didn't want to talk about, she read Vincent's unmoving eyes like a book.
"The usual shit." Vincent responded.
"Clearly not, you have seen some shit and you have never been like this." She called Vincent out on his half-lie. "What did you see?" She repeated.
"... The worst things the human eyes can see. People killed like animals in a slaughterhouse, or worse, experimented on like rats. Watched as a man, struggling for his life, took his last breath and collapsed." He explained "That what you wanted to hear Oksana?" He asked rhetorically.
"I wanted to hear the truth." She stated, ending the conversation.
The rest of the ride home was quiet but when I looked at Vincent it was like I could read his thoughts.
Make them pay.
