Irenic (adjective)
tending to promote peace or

act one

I immediately run after her and find Nick on the floor in his bedroom, convulsing as foam forms at his lips.
I slap my hand in front of my mouth and instantly feel sick to my stomach at the sight of Nick struggling like this.
I fall to my knees besides him and stroke his hair as Madison sits besides me and holds him on his side.
"Come on Nick. Come on baby." She whispers to him.
"Will he be okay?" I ask with tears in my eyes.
"He'll be fine if he gets through this. He just needs to fight." Madison says as she struggles against Nick's spasms.
"Please Nick." I plead, not letting go of him.
Suddenly he starts coughing violently and I feel his muscles relaxing under my hands.
Madison helps him wipe his face before he goes to sit up.
He leans onto me and I hold him carefully, rubbing his back.
"Nick? Are you okay?" Madison asks her son and he nods.
"I'm good." He groans.
"I'll leave you alone for a while." She says softly before everyone leaves the room.
"I thought you were doing better." I sigh, trying to make all of the stress leave my body with a single breath.
"Ups and downs." He laughs weakly.

act two

As more days pass Nick actually starts doing better but this time I keep a closer eye on him, scared to repeat what had happened the other day.
Griselda on the contrary was doing worse and worse.
One morning when I am having breakfast Liza storms in the door, visibly angry.
"They took my patient! They took Hector!" She yells.
"Wait what?" Travis asks confused.
"The military. They said they're taking the sick to a military facility where they have doctors and medical supplies. They're coming for Griselda too." She says looking at Daniel.
"My wife is not going anywhere without me." He huffs before going into the room where his wife and daughter are.
Just then Nick stumbled slightly, catching himself just in time before he falls to the floor by resting his hand on the table I'm sitting at.
"Nick?" I ask with worry.
"I'm fine. Just a bit lightheaded." he replies.
"No. No. No. Not today Nick. The military is coming to get Griselda because she's sick. If they think you're sick too they'll take you!" I say feeling anxiety bubble up inside me.
"Sit down." I order him and he does what he's told.
"They're here!" Liza yells from the window where she was keeping watch.
"Look alive Nick." I say with fear in my eyes as I look at the boy. His face is pale and clammy with a few beads of sweat forming on his forehead.

act three

The soldiers burst through the door and everything happens so quickly. Everyone is protesting but regardless of the pleads from Ofelia and Daniel they carry a sick Griselda out of the door and load her into a truck.
"Let's go!" one of the soldiers yells but then he turns around.
"Wait up! This one is sick too!" He calls to the others who swiftly make their way inside the house again and circle Nick.
I look around for a way to escape but when I look back at Nick he is already looking at me and I know we're thinking the exact same.
I nod at him and immediately he jumps up and we both start running for the backdoor.
Travis and Madison try to block the soldier's way but they push through and pull me and Nick back.
"Hey! Stop! You're hurting him!" I yell as I watch Nick wince from the handcuffs they put on him.
He struggled against them, not taking his eyes away from mine.
"Let him go! He isn't sick!" I yell as I yank away from the soldier's grip.
I run towards Nick but before I can reach him I get hit in the head by the grip of a gun.
This time it's Nick who yells at the men in uniform.
"Leave her alone! Mom, do something!"
Madison runs to my side and makes the man holding me back off.
All of our pleads fall on deaf ears when they drag Nick out of the house and push him inside the truck.
I stay on the floor, grabbing onto my head in pain before Chris runs in.
His face drops when his eyes fall on me.
He comes to kneel down beside me and pushes my hair out of my face.
"They wouldn't let me in! What happened?"
"One of the soldiers hit her in the head with their gun." Madison says angrily.
"They took Nick." I cry out.
"Don't worry, we'll get him back." Madison whispers.
