My head was throbbing as I peered my eyes open from the bright sunbeams that were shining on my face.

That's when I noticed I was still sitting inside the moving car, and that my head was still leaning against Alice's cool, marble neck. My mind began to wonder how long I had been asleep, as I thought it was not even past midnight yet when we had departed Forks the night before.

"You're awake."

I lifted my head to see Alice grinning warmly at me, waking me up almost immediately despite the pounding sensation that was stinging through my temples.

"I'm sorry, I didn't realize I had fallen asleep on you." I hastily said.

"No need to apologize, love, you don't bother me — I'm happy that you got some rest." Alice beamed positively.

"Where are we?" I asked hurriedly. "What time is it?"

"We just arrived in Phoenix." She answered. "And it's a quarter past five pm."

"Phoenix? As in Phoenix, Arizona?" I asked, surprised. "Have I been asleep for longer than two days?"

"No silly," she giggled. "We made it here in less than a day."

"I'll never understand how none of you ever get pulled over for speeding." I shook my head, as Alice laughed.

That's when I remembered, amidst the fuzziness in my mind, that Phoenix was where Bella originally lived with her mother — I immediately felt perplexed why this state and city in particular was their choice to go for hiding us.

"If I may ask," I started. "Why did you guys choose to bring us here?"

"To throw the tracker off our trail," she answered. "We decided that this place would be our hiding destination before we left."

"Wouldn't he have heard you guys deciding that?" I asked worriedly, knowing how in tune vampires are with their sharpened senses.

"That's the idea," Jasper chimed in, keeping his eyes on the road. "He knows that we know he'd listen in on our plan, meaning he wouldn't think to believe that we were actually going to travel to the place he heard us say we would go to."

"Plus there are millions of people here in Phoenix," Willow added, turning from her seat to glance at me over her shoulder. "As long as you both stay with us and we don't go near where Bella's mother resides, you'll be safe."

"And how do the others plan to take him and the woman down?" I pressed.

"Edward, Rosalie, Emmett, Carlisle, and Esme will lead them in a different direction away from Forks — to keep them under the impression that we took you elsewhere as he believes," Alice detailed. "They'll use your and Bella's scent from the jackets to further convince him, and once they get him and Victoria alone, they'll finish them."
