I grip my hand on the car door as Violet jumps out, ready to chase after her but she sits down with this homeless kid. What is she doing?
"Adam?" I mutter, he's staring at her with sympathy in his eyes. "hm?" he mumbles.
"What is she doing?" I ask and then look at him.Adam is staring back at me, his hand sliding across his jaw. "We saved her from the streets yesterday, Cori. 2 months she's been living like that." He sighs.
He's obviously upset because he looks in the other direction, hiding tears from his eyes.
2 months Violet has been living like that. By herself? No money? No food? Now I begin to tear up.
Violet slides back in the car. "Ok, I'm done!" she cheers. Adam looks at her through the rear-view mirror. Still crying but smiling to comfort her.
"What's wrong?" she asks, leaning forward and looking between me and Adam.
He leans back to hug her and he kisses the side of her head. "I'm so sorry, Violet." he sobs. She puts her hand on his.
"It's okay. But you're answering all my questions when we get home." she laughs. He chuckles. "I promise."
We finally pull up to school and when I open the door for Violet to get out she just stays there. She must be so scared.
I climb over her and sit next to her. "It's going to be okay, Violet. Come to me straight away if anyone bothers you." I smile. She looks at me and blinks, trying to stop tears from rolling down her face.
I open my arms and she climbs on to me and hugs me. "Where do I go for dinner, is there like a cool kid table and stuff?" she asks.
I laugh, still got my arms wrapped around her. "No, Violet. Come sit with me and your brother." I say. She nods her head and tightens the grip on my arm.
"Come on, lets go!" Adam shouts cheerfully. We both laugh and climb out.
