Requested by someone who wanted to see Shaw get some love, and I 100% agree. Enjoy this short lil thing. Just over 1k words. Heh. Sorry it's extremely short.

"Beacons are up, Shaw; the power should return any second now." The guardians voice boomed excitedly over comms. For some time now, a fallen captain and his crew have been causing issues across the cosmodrome. And more times than the guardian could count, she was repairing beacons and destroying shanks.

She didn't mind taking the time to help Shaw deal with this captain, and she was usually the first guardian to respond to these types of tasks. She came to the cosmodrome so often that Shaw had become one of her closest friends. It wasn't unusual for her to simply pay him a visit.

Shaw looked down at his monitor when her voice came over comms, watching for the beacon signals. Slowly, they began to return. The lights going from red to green across the screen. "Everything looks good on my end; nice work. Come on back." He said, his ghost hovering over his shoulder.

"What are you looking at?" Shaw asked when he spotted the little light. The ghost shifted in its shell. "Don't you think it's strange she comes around so often?" It inquired, and Shaw looked slightly confused at this.

The hunter made his way to a shelf in the corner of the room, grabbing a cloth that was soaked with some kind of liquid, then unholstering his weapon. "No, why would I?" He asked as he began to clean the gun in his hand. "Well. Aren't these kinds of jobs typically given to newer guardians?"

"Maybe, but being a veteran guardian doesn't mean you can't do the more simple jobs." The hunter protested. It was obvious his ghost's comments had irritated him. "I ain't saying she can't do these simple jobs. I'm just saying it's strange; she would rather be here than off adventuring in new places, doing vanguard operations across the system."

Shaw let a heavy sigh leave his lips. "I have never really thought about it. She's easy to talk to, and I enjoy her company. She's my first real friend since our fireteam-". His ghost cut him off. "I'm sorry."

Shaw placed the weapon back in its holster before returning the cloth to where it belonged. He was silent as he did this, and he could hear his ghost chirp uncomfortably. The little light was confused when the hunter extended a hand to him. But with a reassuring look from the hunter, he nestled himself in the palm of his hand. "I've been lonely, little light. Losing our fireteam left a void that she seems to fill. I appreciate any time she chooses to spend here."

The hunter had a gentle expression on his face as he spoke, his tone sincere. His ghost could seem quite bothersome at times, but Shaw knew most of this was the bot's endless curiosity; he meant nothing by it. It was the thing that made its nagging bearable. With a second to pause, Shaw let go of the little light and made his way back to his monitor as if nothing had happened.

Just as he was about to begin his work, a voice called to him from outside the old building. "Shaw?" It took a matter of seconds for him to recognize it. It was the guardian. Before the hunter could respond, she had made her way into the building, her ghost appearing beside her.

"We brought back the old beacon chips. We figured we should take them before the fallen got to them." She said this, pulling two small devices from her pockets. "Just set them on the crates over there for now." Shaw struggled to find something to say. The only thing on his mind was the conversation he had with his ghost. What if it was right?

He had been silent for so long that it caught the guardians attention. "You're quiet today." She said softly. Shaw looked up from his monitor to see the guardian leaned up against the wall, her helmet tucked gently under her arm. He wasn't sure how to respond. "It's been a long day." The hunter let out a strained chuckle, watching the guardians expression change to one of curiosity.

"Are you sure that's all that's going on?" She pressed, setting her helmet on a crate next to where she stood. "Could I ask you a question?" Shaw finally asked after a moment of hesitation. The guardian gave a patient nod, looking at her ghost with a concerned look on her face. The little light blinks knowingly.

"You're a well-respected warlock. You could be anywhere in the system, doing things directly for the vanguard. What makes you return here? And so often, for that matter."

The guardian shifted where she stood. "Sometimes I need a break from it all. I often lay awake and ask myself questions I probably shouldn't. Ever since I met you, you have given me somewhere to go. Made me feel... safe. I can't say that for most. Doing tasks here gives me a reason to visit you and a reason to think about something else."

Shaw glanced at her, noticing a slight smile on her face. She looked almost relieved. "This is your safe place." He said softly. The warlock merely nodded, her eyes now fixated on the ground.

"Hey. If it makes you feel any better, I look forward to seeing you. You know?"

"You do?" The guardian asked, perking up slightly. "Of course." The hunter smiled. "Since losing my fireteam, you have been my closest friend. Plus, who would I have to tell me your stories? Nobody tells a story like you do." She laughed at this. It was true that she often told him about the strange adventures she had. The two were silent for some time, simply enjoying each other's company. It was Shaw who finally spoke again.

"Guardian." Shaw said softly. "You're always welcome to visit. You don't always have to find a job to do; if you ever need a friend, I will be here. Okay?" She nodded slowly. The warlock had needed to hear those words for a long time.
