Flashback - Mystic Falls 996 A.D.

The people in my village celebrated the beginning of spring every year when the trees would sprout pretty white blooms, this year was no different. While the celebration commenced outside with a bonfire in the night my whole family had joined. Mother was having fun dancing around with my youngest brother, four year old Henrik. Elijah and Nik were both flirting with the town heart throb, Tatia Petrova. Rebekah, even though she was only eight, had already begun her search for a husband in a local boy named Thomas. Even my boring brother Finn had decided to participate in the celebration.

My brother Kol, however, did not allow me to participate in the celebrations. Instead he had me stay inside our little hubble so that he could teach me how to use my newly tapped magic whilst mother and the rest of our family were gone. "Move the feather, Kiara." Kol told me and I tried again for what seemed like the thousandth time, but the small white feather had continued to best me.

I place my hands out in front of me, closing my eyes trying to concentrate. I take a deep breath and try to think about the feather moving. When I open my eyes, I only see the feather in the same place it was before I had closed my eyes. "I can't do it, Kol! I keep trying and nothing is happening." I cross my arms pouting.

Kol was beginning to get frustrated at my repeating failure, but he was insistent on the fact that I keep trying. He waves me over to him, grabbing my hands. "I know you can do this, Kiki, you're stronger than you believe. Magic isn't just the words, or hand motions. You have to believe you can do it. I know you can, now show me what I already know."

I stand up slowly and make my way back over to the small feather. "You know I hate it when you call me that. It's a stupid nickname." He laughs as I sit where I had previously in front of the feather.

I take a deep breath and picture the feather levitating off the floor in my head and when I open my eyes the feather is mimicking the picture in my head. I smile widely and watch Kol's smile match mine. "I told you, you could do it. You will be a very powerful witch one day, Kiara Mikaelson, I just know it."

I move to him quickly, embracing him in a tight hug. "I love you, big brother."

"I love you too, little witchlet." He responds. "Now you have worked very hard today, why don't you go and enjoy the festivities." I let out a long yawn, exhausted from the magic I had exerted. "Or perhaps it is time to call it a night?"

"But I don't like to be here alone. It's scary at night." I was scared of monsters that go bump in the night, even after I became one.

"When will you learn, Kie. You are never alone. I'll be right next to you the whole time. It'll be just you and me." We walk into the room and lay down next to each other in the places we sleep every night. Kol was right, I needed to sleep, magic took a lot of energy that I didn't have and so I was asleep within minutes of lying down.
