Yuuki's P.O.V.
It's been ten minutes since I jumped out my window, and I just saw the car leave with only my sister. Where's mom and dad?
I walked through the back door, slowly closing it and quietly tip toeing through the kitchen to get to the living room. As I entered, I saw blood on the wall to my left. I knew what would probably be on the floor, but I just couldn't accept it. Maybe it's just my imagination, or maybe it's not. I desperately didn't want to look down, but I still did. There I saw both my mom and dad on the ground, dead. I took a deep breath to calm my racing heart, as well as suck back the tears that weaved their way out of my eyes.
The T.V was still on, but the words coming out were muffled. There was a ringing in my ears that I couldn't stop, but thankfully I was able to make out the words. "The government has been taken over. You must sing in order to survive. Please find somewhere to hide and don't, I repeat, don't stay in your homes! Find safety A.S.A.P." The TV kept repeating, but I didn't bother to turn it off. I looked down again, this time looking into my mom's eyes as I remembered the gunshots I heard from upstairs.
I wonder who was the first to die, but why singing? Why not something else other than singing? What kind of people come in and force everyone to sing?
As I was lost in my thoughts, staring into my mom's unblinking eyes, I heard the door open. Quickly, without thinking, I bent down, closing mom's eyes and running up the stairs. The lights flicker off and the sounds from the TV stopped. My breathing came out short and hard, my heart pounding in my chest frantically.
I heard a boy, maybe around 16, which is how old I am, silently yell with a rasp in his voice. "Damn, they cut the power off!" I accidentally put my foot down on the step that creaks when you put weight on it. "Who's there?" As I heard him walking towards the steps, I bolted up the stairs and into my room. I quickly jumped out my open window for the second time today, but instead of jumping off the roof, I slid to the side of the window where the boy can't find me.
What I don't want to do is jump again. Last time it really hurt, and anyways, the boy didn't sound like he was someone bad.
"Hey, I'm not apart of them. You don't have to be afraid of me." I heard the boy say as the sound of footsteps entered my room.
Should I trust him, or should I just jump?
I looked into my room, seeing the boy look behind my bed which was thrown upwards. My room looked like a mess, and I just cleaned it around thirty minutes ago!
Bummer.
The boy looked up to where I was, so I hid again. I barely got a glimpse of him, but he looked really skinny and had messy brown hair. It looked like he had run his fingers through his hair a million times. He had no muscles, so I know I could take him 'cause from the looks of it, I'm much stronger than him. I heard him walk over to my window, and the next thing you know, he poked his head out.
I sucked in my gut, trying to look like a part of the house. Too bad I failed miserably since the boy still saw me. He had pretty dark brown eyes and honestly, he looked like a nerd.
"What are you doing out there?" he asked, raising one eyebrow.
"What are you doing in my house?" I snapped, giving him an icy glare.
"I was looking for food and anyone else who haven't been taken. Now, answer my question."
"I'm here because - wait, why should I tell you? How do I know if I can trust you?" I had the urge to smack myself on the forehead at my stupidity. For all I know, he can be a kid on their side that's used to lure out people like me.
"I don't know. You just have to, I guess. Although, I can give you a few reasons. First of all, I can't sing and I'm not ordering you to sing. Oh, and my personal favorite, I don't have any weapons. Now, can you come in here before they come back?" He reached out his hand, gesturing at me to grab it.
This boy does make a pretty good point.
I slowly reach for his hand, and he helped by pulling me in. "I'm Carter, Carter Priser. I used to go to your school 'till I got home schooled. If I remember correctly, you're Yuuki Miller." He introduced himself as I stepped down.
Wait, he actually knows me? Hold up, did he say Priser?
"Do you, by any chance, know Lilly Priser? She used to be one of my best friends and my running buddy until she moved. Then she had to change her number and she lost mine, so we lost contact," I explained.
He looked down with an unknown expression on his face. "Yeah, Lilly, my twin. She was taken by those men. I don't know about the rest of my family, I was too scared to go back inside. I did, however, see my other sister with them, so they took both my sisters. All I can do is pray."
I saw a single tear fall to the ground so I, with my amazing comforting skills, lift his head with my finger so he can look into my eyes. "Don't worry, we'll find them, and we can take these guys down. They took my sister, too, and you already saw that my parents are dead. We have to stay strong, though."
I grabbed his hand, pulling him to my closet. I pulled out a bag and stashed some clothes in there. I then remembered my box. "Hey, Priser, help me with this thing."
He bent down to help me pull the box out. It was filled with a lot of food cans. For three years straight I stashed a can each week and hid it, thinking that the zombie apocalypse was about to come. I pulled out another bag and threw it at Carter. He took two-thirds of the cans, so I took the rest and went down the stairs to grab a bunch of water bottles. Carter followed behind me as we fled to the back and into the woods. There was another neighborhood on the other side of the woods, and we finally decided to walk that way to hopefully find someone who fled as well.
"So, Carter, what happened to bring you to my house earlier?" I asked, looking down at my beat-up shoes.
"Well, you see, I was just watching TV when the news broadcast came on, telling us what had happened, and then I started to get up when I found that my door was jammed. Which, thank god by the way. I wanted to see what everyone else thought of the whole thing. Then I heard the safety of a gun being released. I didn't hear any gunshots, but I did hear Lilly scream. When I heard that, I was just about to jump out the window, but the thing was, it was in front of the front yard and my room was above the driveway. I guess the guy there thought the house was clean of anyone else, so they didn't check the rest of the house. Again, thank god. I then heard the engine of a car go off so I ducked from the window. I looked out the window only for a second and saw them push Lilly's head into the car. Kristy, my other sister, was being held up by some man who wasn't willing to let go of her. I saw him make her sit on his lap. Too bad this was the week Kristy chose to visit us from college. Once they left I opened my window and I threw a bunch of pillows down. I tried to climb over to the porch, and I was lucky to be able to make it by holding on to the gutters. I just ran until I couldn't run anymore and stopped at your house. So, how are you still alive and here?" Carter asked.
"Well, you see, I was on my computer when I heard my sister, Charlotte, start yelling. She said we needed to leave. I was about to go down and see why, but I heard a gunshot, so I quickly ducked and ran back to my room. I heard two more gunshots before a guy yelled to search the house. I wasn't thinking rationally, so I just opened the window and jumped. I hid behind a bush to the side of the house until I saw the men put Charlotte in the car and drive off. When they left I went back in the house and you know the rest from there." Right as I finished there was a loud scream. I looked at Carter before we both ran to the direction of the scream.
