Chapter 4

*Yuuki's P.O.V*

We were running to the scream we heard, and as we got closer I heard a gunshot. I grabbed Carter's shoulder because he was right beside me. If I do say so myself, he's pretty fast and I even did a sport dealing with running, which is cross country. I pulled him behind a bush. I did happen to see him look over at me before he blushed, but I ignored it.

I looked over the bush to see a girl running our way. I looked at where she was running from. I saw two men, and one was aiming a gun right at her. Quickly, without thinking, I jumped up and yelled at the men while waving my hands around like a crazy person. I jumped over the bush and ran the opposite way the girl ran. I keep screaming at the men to come and get me. I started running backwards when I saw the men starting to chase me but they're not fast enough. While I had my head turned around I saw Carter grab the girl and climb a tree right by the bush we were at before. I decided to run back to the house before I actually start heading to the tree because I didn't want to get Carter and the girl captured by the men who used to be chasing me.

I ran until I reached a clearing. I turned around to see that there was nobody around. At least, that was what I thought. As I was walking backwards I hit something that make an umph sound. I quickly jumped back to see a girl. She looked to be around the age of ten, and she had red hair and light blue eyes. She was looking right at me. "Who are you?" We both said simultaneously.

"I'm Yuuki. And you are....?" I asked.

"Emily."

"Hi Emily. How old are you? And what happened?"

"I'm thirteen, and I don't really remember what happened. I just remember hearing a door open, and then waking up without any of my family members around. When I got up I felt a pain in my shoulder. After I iced my shoulder-" Emily was interrupted by a sound of a car driving up. I grabbed her hand and ran into the woods.

We were around halfway to where Carter and that one girl is, or was. I guess I'll find out. "I think we're safe now. I know a guy who may or may not still be at this spot. There was also another girl that we saw but I don't know what happened after I ran off. Hey, you didn't get to complete what you were saying. You were saying something about your shoulder," I explained.

"Oh, yeah, um...I was just going to say after I iced and bandaged my shoulder I went to change my shirt. As I was heading up the steps the power went out. Around five minutes after the power went out I heard a gunshot and I ran outside. I was walking backwards from the house when I bumped into you. But, hey, I have a question, why were you coming out of the woods? And also what's happening?"

"Well, what I know is that we've been taken over by a new kind of government. This government decides whether or not you can sing well, and if you can't sing well, they'll kill you."

"Hold on a second, did you say sing? Pfft, who does that? I mean, more than half of the people in the world can't sing!"

"Yeah, I know it's weird, but that's what happened. And what was the second thing you asked? Wait, hold that thought. We're here." I looked up to see a foot hanging down a branch. "Hey, you're not that good at hiding, are you?" I laughed as I saw Carter's head peek over the branch.

"Yuuki, we were just talking about you! So what do you want to do now? I say we call this tree base and call it a night," he declared as he leaned back. I rolled my eyes before climbing up the tree. I climbed to his branch and pushed him down. He wasn't that high.

"Fine with me, but you have first watch. I'm tired since I ran all day. Emily, pick a branch and make yourself at home." I looked down to see Carter lifting his pinky. I know he means that as a bad sign, but It looked more likes he was British. "What are you, British? It's not even tea time, and hate to break it to you, but we have no tea." He stuck his tongue out before helping Emily up the tree. "Thanks Carter! Wake me up at like, one."

"How would I know when one o'clock is?" he said, completely clueless. I threw my watch down. "Thanks, Yuuki. Night." someone said, but I don't know who. And with that I fell asleep.

"Yuuki!?"

Wait, what? Who the heck is that?

"Yuuki, is that you?"

Wait a minute, I know that voice!

I turned around, looking at Charlotte. She was far away, maybe four hundred meters. I ran to her with tears rolling down my cheeks. I ran as fast as I could. When I was halfway there a guy appeared with a gun to her head.

"You're too slow," he mocked as he pulled the trigger. A scream filled with anger and sadness left my lips as I ran even faster to my sister. Then it hit me, I'm too slow. Way, way, way too slow. I stopped with one hundred meters left between us and I fell. I fell down a dark black hole and I can't see anything, only darkness.

"Yuuki! This is the last time I will repeat your name before I throw you off the tree. OK, fine if that's how you want to play it, then fine. One. Two..."

I jumped up, falling off the tree."What was that for!" I hissed, looking at Carter who looked amused. I felt the area around me to find a thick rock, which I threw at him. He lost his balance and fell right beside me. I laughed at his as he stood up, wincing.

Suddenly, a man yelled, "Who's there!" I climbed up the tree to Emily, and Carter woke up the girl from yesterday. I think her name is Caroline. I grabbed Emily, who would not wake up, and threw her on my back while I climbed down the tree.

As I hit the ground Carter was already running with Caroline right behind him. I ran after him, and when I got up to his pace I looked behind me to see about seven men behind us. As I was looking behind me I felt the ground below me vanish. I looked down to see that I was sliding down the edge of a cliff. As I fell, I dropped Emily who woke up and gripped onto the branch I fell on, which caused her to fall. I just sat there on my back, looking up to where I saw the men around the edge of the cliff. I did happened to hear one of the men say, "They're as good as dead down there." I felt the branch break, and I fell face first to the bottom of the cliff.
