IN MY attempts to create a diverse cast, where everyone can find a character to relate to, I must also remain aware of the time period in which the story is set.
Though I have moved the year up to 1967, it is important to note a few things—- homosexuality has only been legalized in the entire state of Oklahoma in 2003. Racism still remained deep rooted, and there were extralegal campaigns and efforts to exclude African Americans. And women had not held many notable positions, in government etc., until the 1990's.
So, in saying this, I hope to caution those who read of the content inside that might be sensitive. I could not write this story in good conscience without addressing said issues. I feel it would be ignorant of me.
So, if at any point, I get something wrong, kindly correct me, please.
And, if you are sensitive to discussions and dialogue that involve— homophobia, racism, misogyny, classism, etc., there will be a gentle warning before each topic arises.
