Shepley’s lips moved closer towards mine and the sudden burst of shock turning to panic made me slide down the wall until my butt hit the floor. Smirking, Shepley looked down at me as he still held my arms awkwardly.
“As flattered as I am by your blunt proposal,” I said sweetly. “Let me the hell go!”
Still smirking like he was finding my rejection amusing, he pulled me up and walked off behind his desk. “We’ll pick this up in a minute. I have a phone call.”
I arched an eyebrow. “I don’t hear a phone.”
“My secretary told me in my mind,” he said, catching my gaze. “You do know about the Pack link, am I right?”
I scoffed. “Of course I do.”
He stared at me a second longer then shook his head like I was unbelievable and picked up the phone. “This is Enright. What is it?”
Seeing that he was now occupied, I turned to make a dash for it but his intense glare had my hand shrinking back from the handle. It wasn't that he scared me of anything, or that I’d suddenly reconsidered his offer, just the reminder he could have a dozen guards here in a minute just with a thought. Currently I wasn't in the mood for battling through a bunch of beefy werewolves.
“No,” he said into the phone, eyes lingering on me for a second to make sure I wasn't leaving, then glancing away, “I’m afraid no murderer has been running across my lawn this morning.”
That comment made my ears perk up.
“A female? Please would a female really do any of those things?” Shepley sounded like he was amused and didn’t believe a word the person on the phone was telling him.
“Look, if you want justice you’ve called the wrong Pack, Nathan. There’s no way she would have run this far so quickly.”
My stomach almost dropped through me and I couldn’t stop my pounding heart from racing a mile a minute. Oh god. Oh god. It was all I could think as panic descended. I felt eyes on me and I looked up. Shepley had noticed.
“In case I come across this girl,” he said into the phone, “what is her name?”
There was a muffled sound from the other end.
“Eva,” Shepley grinned but it didn’t reach his stony eyes and they snapped onto me. “What a lovely name. I’ll let you know if anything comes up.”
He put the phone down and his face broke into a sneer. He shook his head at me, tut-tutting me softly. “Oh Eva, Eva. What have you done?”
I looked up at him slowly through my dark lashes, my gaze hardening as my innocent persona shattered. With my face now expressionless, I did the only thing I could. In a split second, the letter opener had been whipped off the desk and pressed against Shepley’s throat.
I kicked his knees out from under him and pulled his head to expose the tender skin of his neck. A small smile spread across my face and a chuckle escaped my lips.
“Now,” I said as I ignored his struggles and growls, “we can do this the easy way or the fun way. You can let me go and I will leave your territory immediately. Or you can hand me over and get your windpipe cut out.”
“I don’t know which sounds more fun,” he snarked, growls evading him as I pressed the blade harder.
“I don’t want to hurt you, Shepley,” I murmured, “I really don’t. But if you give me to him I have no choice.”
“There’s always a choice,” he snarled, “and I can see from the one you’re making now, you’ve made the wrong one many times.”
“I didn’t kill those people,” I said, tugging his hair playfully, enjoying it a little when he resisted. “My mate thinks I did so he banished me. The country thinks I did and is out to get me. All, except you. So I’m giving you a choice.”
“I didn’t think the legends where true.” He twisted his head until his eyes locked with mine. “You really are one of the ten.”
And the door burst of its hinges as a dozen werewolves flooded into the room.
