Returning

I sat at my desk, mentally sighing as I closed my eyes to relax for a moment. School had barely opened, so I took that opportunity to come to school early and get settled down.

Nobody knows why I was gone for so long, except for two people: Add and me.

I unpacked my bag for first hour, then left the classroom to go get some breakfast from the cafeteria.

There, the nice lunch lady greeted me, welcoming me back to school from my long absence.

"What would you like for today dearie?"

I liked at today's menu: breakfast sandwich, breakfast burrito, or omelet with hashed potatoes.

"I'll just take an omelet without the potatoes please."

"Coming right up sweetheart."

I watched as she prepared the omelet by hand, cracking the eggs, mixing it with milk, and pouring it into the pan.

If you got here early enough in the morning, they'd prepare you breakfast, and even lunch if you were in a rush. That's what I love about Ruben High sometimes. The workers here are really nice.

She finished up by adding cheese and salsa, wrapping it in a bun afterwards and in a plastic wrap.

"Here you go. Have a great day Miss Eve!" The lunch lady waved at me as I walked out the door. I paused, turning around to face her.

"Thank you for the omelet Mrs. Ann!" I shouted, waving back to her. She smiled and laughed.

I left the cafeteria, eating my omelet as I walked to the Department of Science and Technology. There, I walked all the way up to the top floor, where a hallway separated me from a lone door. Slowly, I approached it.

Mmmm...I love Mrs. Ann's omelettes. They're the best in town.

I opened the door, not knowing what to expect.

Or maybe I should have expected him.

He didn't seem to notice me, so I snuck past him and sat in my usual spot, putting my headphones on as I scrolled through the playlist.

Finishing up the last of my omelet, I made myself comfy against the wall.

"I try to ignore the hurt inside"
"And bit, by bit"
"Part of me dies."

"The smile on my face is just a lie"
"A lie, a lie"
"I just can't hide"

I continued to sing.

"The blade of a knife that cuts so deep"
"The pain, the pain"
"I don't dare speak."

"I can't let you know the way I feel"
"A secret I keep."

Tears were falling down my face, sniffling as I finished up my little verse. My lips trembled.

I looked up, our eyes making for the first time ever in a few weeks.

"Eve..."

I couldn't look away from him.

"Add...I'm probably late to say this, but..."

I stood up.

"I love you Add Kim."
