WEI

My mentor had held a strong grudge to the previous Representative of Malaysia. His hatred was repaid with an equally potent- if not more- howling fury from the then Malaysian Representative. His eccentric dislike had made up most of my memories of my late mentor.

Perhaps that was why they got along so well.

One incident had remained in the deep recesses of my memory- I was still a child compared to my mentor and was forced to join an ASEAN meeting beside him as his heir. There, under the droning voice of ASEAN, was the first time I had met Raya, the next Malaysian representative and heiress to the Malaysian land. While our mentors exchanged withering looks that seemed to punch each other in the gut throughout the meeting, Raya and I entertained ourselves by shooting ugly faces at each other from under the table. She'd pull and stretch her face, contorting it to comical complexions, all while I tried my best to suppress an oncoming barrage of laughter.
That meeting ended with me in a livelier mood than before.

Later on, when my mentor was closing the end of his lifetime. He had sought out the then Malaysian Representative for a final visit, one that both of them never returned from.
(context: Country representatives go poof into dust when they die)
In some way, they were each other's best friend. The only one they had, despite the ups and downs in their relationship.
Now, staring at the unconscious form of Raya, I could almost imagine the verbal abuse I would get from my mentor. Burying my face into the fresh jacket provided by my team, I watched as countless doctors and nurses buzzed around her limp body. Flashes of red plagued my mind every time I closed my eyes, leaving me to bask in my fatigue.

"Mr Wei, Sir. If we may have a word with you."
Noticing the bottom half of a doctor's robe in front of me, I turned my attention to the weary doctor.
"Ms Raya will be fine,"he sighed, rubbing his temples roughly. " if she was hit anywhere else, she would have perished immediately. No matter how resilient her body was."
She's ok.
The remaining energy was suddenly sapped from my body as I raced to reach that conclusion. An uncharacteristic feeling of overwhelming relief flooded through me. Finally, I could breathe without a constricting weight on my lungs.
My gaze landed on her again, feeling a rush of exhilaration at every minute rise and fall of her chest.
That- her breathing- was proof she hadn't slipped away yet.
"Thank you. Dr-"
"Xing. The name's Dr Xing." The black haired doctor shot an assuring smile in my direction,
" Don't thank me. I've been taking care of the young lady since she was appointed to her position. It's my duty to be there whenever she falls and to nurse her back to health."
His voice had carried a boundless sense of joy and loyalty, an amount so large that many would be envious of him.
Typical of Raya to have such reliable subordinates, after all, her ability in seeing through people was flawless.
The tips of my mouth pulled into an uncontrollable grin.

" Thank you for at least telling me how she is, doctor."

"Its my pleasure. It is heartwarming to see such a close relationship between you and Raya."
he huffed, wiping his glasses leisurely  with the corner of his white coat.
The endless beeping of monitors seemed to perpetuate through the room for a moment, as I thought of an appropriate reply.
"Though,if you would excuse me, you are filthy." His voice returned before I could reply, "Go home, get some rest. Try not to make those close to you worried."
Startled, I wiped my hand against my cheek roughly , before staring at it in chagrin as a thick layer of grime and oil came off it.
Did all that really come off me?
" I- I understand. Thank you for your concern." I stuttered, wavering in my speech as a thick wave of fatigue washed over me. The scratchy hospital seat suddenly felt like an endless sea of feathers.
"Take care. Goodbye Mr Wei."
The doctor waved me off nonchalantly, slipping out of the hospital room.
