THE PROLOGUE
Five | The Girl on Fire
•••FLEUR COULD RECALL HER VICTORY TOUR. THE WAY THAT SHE DESPERATELY WANTED IT TO BE OVER AS SOON AS IT BEGAN. Traveling from District to District had been the only enjoyable part. She'd always wondered how things looked outside of One and when she saw how bad people in other Districts had it, it opened her eyes to the disparities of life.
Her Victory Tour had also been where President Snow had negotiated with a freshly fifteen-year-old Fleur and told her that if she came to a few Capitol parties and socialized with the people of the Capitol then he wouldn't hurt her family, but if she refused then bad things would happen. Of course, Fleur was young and easily spooked so she accepted.
Fleur hated the people of the Capitol. From the kids who screamed her name and dyed their hair the same color as her own to the adults who paid a pretty penny to bed her. If she could, she'd drive a sword through the chest of every member of the Capitol elite.
Instead of living out her greatest fantasy, Fleur had to fake smiles as she mingled with the very people she wanted to kill.
Dressed in a long pink dress decorated with sequins and a long slit up the side, Fleur moved her way through the crowd. She and Cashmere had arrived together, but she'd lost the older victor when she snuck away to the snack table for strawberries and champagne.
Fleur hadn't seen the guests of honor and she honestly was fine if she didn't make the acquaintance of the star-crossed lovers this evening. There was a part of her brain that blamed Katniss for her sister's death. She found that part to be slightly illogical, but that didn't change the fact that she dreamt of killing the beloved Girl on Fire for taking away her sister.
As Fleur looked around the room, shoving a strawberry into her mouth, she set her sights on Katniss Everdeen. The new victor standing awkwardly in the corner of the room, fidgeting with the straps of her dress. She looks around for her lover to find him on the dance floor dazzling one of the Capitol's up-and-coming designers.
She watches her for a moment, observing as many Capitol elites wander over, asking for the new victor's hand to dance, but she politely refuses. Katniss's eyes danced around the room as though she were looking for an escape.
As Katniss looks around the room, her eyes meet Fleur's and she quickly averts her gaze, dropping it to the floor. She waits a second, and then another before looking back at Fleur who was still watching her. Fleur quirks a brow at her and Katniss looks away once again.
Someone approaches Katniss and she quickly excuses herself as she makes her way over to where the food is, which also happens to be where Fleur is standing.
Fleur knocks back the remainder of her champagne before Katniss is standing beside her. She wanted to get a feel for the victor. She also wanted to play with her a little. It's what all the new victors did with each other. She remembered when she first met Finnick and how he'd flirted with her relentlessly.
Fleur watches as Katniss surveys the food as though she's going to grab something. She looks up and meets Fleur's curious gaze.
"Fleur Belcourt," Katniss greets. She remembered Fleur's games. The way that she was the first one to the Cornucopia and had singlehandedly taken out half of the tributes and scared the rest away. She's the only tribute to kill at least one tribute from each district.
She was also the older sister of Glimmer, whom Katniss had killed in the games six months ago.
"Katniss Everdeen," Fleur greets, "You know there was a time when I was the most popular person at these parties."
