Queen Of The Four Winds

They call me Queen of the Four Winds. The beloved child of elements of the world. Though I'm given such a grand name, I can't help but loathe it. I cannot imagine the responsibility of such a title. My mother didn't seem to like it much either, or at least that's what she told me when we were in private.

Our dinner meetings were a highlight most of the time. I tell mother about my time amongst the humans and she tells me about her time amongst the other dynasties. I never thought however that it would come to an end. It's shocking really.

She reigned for several millennia and never once showed signs of letting go of that torch. She listened to the other guardians and their demands. She made sure there was harmony with them and that no ill will seeped in the crevices. She was, dare I say, perfect at what she did. Now I see that line of thought was naive.

Of course, not even the guardians are without fault. The Mountain King has the job of sculpting the land but has a bad tendency of allowing boulders to fall amongst the humans. I heard that they made scientific claims of rockslides being normal. If they only saw the invisible hands causing them with a slip of the chisel, their study books would be telling a different tale.

Nevertheless, even that pales compared to mother's faux pas. In just the past decade, she revealed herself as a guardian to the humans. She demanded them to worship her if they wanted the solution to all their problems. But that worship alone is reserved for the one who created the guardians and the humans, Trinity. She gave the guardians power to help the humans and not to rule them because the humans were very precious to her. The humans needed only a guiding hand, not a dictator. And children of guardians helped in other ways by becoming observers like myself.

As an observer, I used to walk amongst the humans as a human. I ate what they ate. I walked where they walked. And I was hoping it could stay that way. Oh, the joys of feeling the sun's warmth on the cool beach. The taste of so many different cuisines! Given the limited ingredients they had compared to our realm, the humans knew how to make a meal. They truly made the most of their land. Yet, there was also the pollution and wastefulness. My job at the time was to report back to the council on how we could encourage them to change their ways.

Mother, oh mother. She thought that the humans needed someone to tell them directly. She made decisions without the council to tell them plainly what needed to be done to reverse the damage at the cost of their allegiance to her alone. As great as it is to become directly involved, that didn't come without consequences.

So many humans began to demand things. Extravagant things now they knew who my mother was. What made it worse is that she gave in to a few of the demands. This, in turn, caused many men to plead day and night, which made the other guardians both irritated and a bit jealous. The guardians knew that Trinity wanted us to talk amongst each other and relay our ideas to her, and she either approves or asks us to revise. Trinity wanted us to think through things together. Yet, seeing the accolades my mother received, they were also tempted to have the humans recognize them. Thankfully, they didn't. They began to see the dark side of that worship.

It reached a point where my mother couldn't contain humanity's rage at the issues they faced. They blamed her for all the ill that happened on Earth. Even though they were given so much from my mother, the material things weren't enough. Trinity saw this all unfold and wasn't shocked, to say the least. She knew that free will for the guardians could lead to something like this, but she loved the guardians too much to make them mindless slaves. Trinity also knew that the complaints about the ills of the world was her burden alone along with the worship. It was part of being the ultimate creator of free will minded individuals. Countless choice breeds countless outcomes, both good and bad.

In the end, my mother resigned and left her post. No longer was she the queen to blow warm wind on those who were cold and a cool breeze on those who were weary. No longer could she supply the rain for the human's crops and a clear covering from the intense sun. That was my job now. And, Trinity help me, I want her to take this all back.

Trinity did tell me though that everyone must step into shoes they aren't prepared for, sooner or later. She hugged me and my mother so close that day when the torch was passed to me. And now, here I stand, overlooking the world. The Queen of the Four Winds. Hopefully, my mother will come back someday and be a better guardian. Hopefully, the good and bad I learned from my mother can help through being one myself.
