Waking up being chased by a man with a massive knife that turns out to be satisfyingly sharp and then finding a couple of people who refer to him as Mikey in the most endearing way was not what Celeste expected to happen when she signed up for this. Always read the fine print she thinks to herself as she looks over a bale of hay she's currently hiding behind. She has lost any sight of the man and woman who had helped her stitch up her back quicker than she had thought possible, but she does see a light towering over her from the other side of the hay and she slowly moves over, trying to remember what she was meant to be doing with these damned wires on the gen that is supposed to light up the lamp post. But only a few seconds pass by and Celeste manages to mismatch the wires and blow the gen right in her face. She had heard another gen start up somewhere in the big barn, but the smell of the place alone makes her reconsider running towards it.
Before she even takes a step towards any direction, she feels the knife slice her back open once more almost exactly where it had slashed her before. Celeste screams out in pain, but survival instinct was never needed in the bakery she used to work in. She knows that she will be fine once she's out of here, but the pain is as real as she could ever have imagined. She tries to ignore it and run for the barn, where a satisfying electrical click goes off, and she sees the light in front of her, but as she turns the corner Celeste is met by another slash towards her chest which she somehow manages to avoid. The chase is soon ended by Mikey picking her right off the window she tries to leap through and her pathetic attempts to escape his grip are met with an incredibly sharp pain piercing through her shoulder-blade. As she looks down she realizes there is a black hook sticking through her flesh.
The rest of the Trial doesn't go much better. Celeste gets rescued twice, she gets stitched up and the gens that she didn't blow in the other Survivors' faces are soon visited by her Killer over and over until Mikey catches Celeste unawares working nervously on a gen near the exit. She expects the pain to be equally tenacious, but the simulation pulls her out before she has time to react and she wakes up in a bright white room surrounded by two nurses.
''You're good to go once you finish this,'' says one of the nurses and hands her a strange looking liquid that doesn't taste as horrible as it feels going down her throat; it's thick and cold, but Celeste feels more alert and content once she hands back the glass.
She quickly looks around. The room is very basic, apart from the machine that she was just connected to. The nurse with the liquid seems to be looking at some data while the other one, who looks more like an assistant, is cleaning the machine down. Celeste makes her way through the hallway and runs into one of the women that she met in the Trial. In the hallway light the woman looks radiant and just naturally beautiful, she laughs and informs Celeste that she did not make it either. Mikey was in a foul mood today, apparently he hasn't been doing well this month, that's when Celeste found out that Killers also get given points for how the Trial turns out.
''My name is Kate,'' she gives Celeste her hand and squeezes it softly.
''Celeste. ''
Both women make their way out of the building towards the cabins they live in. The houses look like holiday resort wooden houses and she has only spent one night there so far, but it was more comfortable than the little cold apartment that she had called home for the last 7 years. Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea. Besides, after this, she should be able to live a little more luxuriously, but Celeste realizes that she has just done her first Trial and it was not pleasant. It will be a long year.
Celeste's room is cozy, but has everything one might need. The communal kitchen is on the bottom floor and she's in one of the five rooms of the house. It overlooks the camp fire that seems to be burning non stop in the middle of all the little cabins. Celeste can hear laughter and music coming from over there. The sun is nearly rising - the Trial she just escaped should be ending soon. She takes a long hot shower and heads to sleep. Tomorrow she will try and figure out how to improve and stay in the Trial for longer than one gens worth.
