I could read the words UNIVERSITY OF ALTA SCIENTIA in perfect English, not Thai. I was facing my future, the new life that awaited me. That was how things were going to be for me from now on. Today was my first day in college, in one of the most prestigious private colleges of the country, one place that I never thought I would stand a chance to set foot on.

Some would say I was lucky to be here, but only I knew how this outcome wasn't based on luck. The effort I put to achieving this long awaited dream, no one could ever understand or measure it. And now was the moment, I had finally made it.

Taking a deep breath, and having one of the brightest smiles, I walked through the gates. I could almost instantly spot my childhood best friend Waan. She was just a few meters ahead, and I rushed to reach her.

_Waan Waan! - I greeted her and placed my arm around her shoulders. She was about ten centimeters shorter than me, and her pitch black hair was cut in a short channel style, with symmetrical bangs that covered her eyebrows almost entirely.

_Dara! - She smiled at me pushing her big round glasses with her index finger closer to her eyes. _I missed you! How was Chiang Mai?

_Almost the same as it was every other year, I enjoyed my grandma's food and prayed in the temples with my father. Nothing much more than that. And what about you? How was the college orientation? I bet it was exciting!

The only regret I had about the beginning of my university life was not being able to attend the three days of orientation and initiation. I was traveling to the mountains to visit my mother's family and pray for her in the temples on her birthday date. My mom passed away a few years ago, and since then, every year, my father and I would spend the date with my grandmother and visit the temples with her.

_Oh, it was okay. I met a lot of people, but you know me, I couldn't really talk much with them. - Waan faced the ground with a little bit of an upset expression marking her face. She was a very shy person who easily felt embarrassed. She wouldn't talk much with strangers and would feel very uncomfortable around people she didn't know.

_I'm sorry I wasn't here with you. I also wanted to have had the experience... but you know, my mom was more important.

_You don't have to say that, I know it. I wasn't saying it to make you feel guilty. Oh! When you make these eyes you really look like an actress starring a drama! - She said looking up to me.

_Can you please stop with the praises? It makes me embarrassed. - I said in a playful way, even though it was true. Waan would constantly compliment me for anything, but mainly towards my looks.

_I can't help it, I just have an amazingly beautiful best friend! - She exclaimed.

_Okay, okay... now please can you show me around? I just came here on the entrance exam day and I didn't have the chance to see much that day.

_Of course! I was already going to do it! - She said and started to walk faster towards the main building, bringing me with her. She showed me around, pointing to the places and passing on to me everything that she knew about it. She also told me about the three days of orientation, what were her first impressions of our classmates, of our veterans and of the teachers. Unsurprisingly, even though she got to know the names of a lot of people and could recognise their faces perfectly, she hadn't made any friends.

_You know I'm too shy for it. - She said. _But you'll easily bond with everyone. See, those guys over there are already looking at you. - She then indicated a group of students that really was glaring at us from a little afar. I sighed.

_They're a bunch of rich kids... do you think I have the chance to marry well here? - I joked.

_You could probably marry anyone here, with your looks and your brains every guy will fall for you. And some girls too. - She added. _But I don't think you would like any of them, though.
