I yelled as Evengaline's knife flipped over and landed in her eye.
How did that happen? I knew Inflama had warned me the girl would be powerful, but I failed to see just how much.
Gritting my teeth, I turned towards the girl- Kira, Inflama said her name was-, and she looked just as shocked as I felt.
"Why would you do that?" I demanded.
Kira looked personally offended. She recovered quickly, though. Narrowing her eyes and flipping her impossibly long hair, she said, "Um, you tried to kill me."
I felt a slash in my leg as Amethyst tried to grab a dagger. I whirled toward her, gripping my knife she stole, and swiped it at her.
She dodged.

"Whatever fate comes to you," I hissed, "you deserve. Traitor."
Amethyst blinked. "If anyone's a traitor here, it's you."
My head felt a massive yank as Kira pulled my hair. Snarling, I kicked her shin. The stupid girl yelped. I threw a hand out on either side of me, a knife in either hand.
Kira stepped towards me, hands up, as if approaching a wild animal.

I jabbed the knife at her. She stepped back.
Her blue eyes looked into mine, and I could see her fighting to tell where she'd seen me before.
I'd hoped she wouldn't recognize me, but my hope was apparently in vain.
I could see Amethyst tapping her watch from the corner of my eye, and I lept at her. She tried to punch me. I caught her fist. With my other hand, I sliced her watch off.
She yelled angrily.
I heard a moan and looked to see Evengaline's eye leaking blood. I walked over to her, knowing she needed help, but also knowing I couldn't take these guys to first base with me.
Inflama was going to be furious with me, but I knew it would be nothing compared to letting her niece die.
I sighed, picking up Evengaline.
"I'll be back."

Inflama was, in one word, furious.

The second I came into First Base with Evengaline in my arms, she practically spouted fire in her rage.

I mostly blocked her out. I picked up snippets of "Can't even trust my top warrior," and "bested by a humanborne," and "ridiculous."

I was thinking about those beautiful brown eyes, warm like a flicker of chocolate-covered fire.

I know that makes no sense, but that's how it felt looking into her eyes.

And the way she tossed her hair. God, it was so cocky.

I gritted my teeth and turned back to queen Inflama.

"Look, your majesty," I spat, "I really don't have time for this right now. I brought Evengaline back home alive. You should be happy. We located this girl, found Amethyst, and escaped alive. So, if you'll excuse me, it's my shift for the Sulden Sword."

With that, I turned on my heel, and, hand on my sword's hilt, strode out of there.

"So, she literally yelled at you?"

My best friend, Leesla, and I were polishing the Sulden Sword. Well, I was polishing the Sulden Sword. Leesla made an oath to herself three years ago never to fight. She quit Training and taught herself the ways of medicine. It was probably the most 'good' thing that any of us in the Bea Team did.

"Yep," I replied, popping the 'p'.

Lee-Lee shook her head angrily. She stopped mixing herbs to look up at me. "She's insane."

I chuckled. "Maybe. But she's also the queen of the Bea Team. She's definitely not going to be questioned."

Leesla slammed down her salve. She narrowed her eyes at me. "Then you need to be the one to question her."

I blinked at her. "You do realize I'm her top Warrior, right? If I question her, she'll smite me and put me out of my job."

Leesla sighed. "I honestly don't get why you joined the Bea Team. They're a bunch of evil maniacs, and if I hadn't been born here with no other place to go, I'd have left ten years ago."

I went back to polising the sword, the rag squeaking under the pressure of my hands.

I licked my lips. "Yeah, well, you won't ever get anything about me."

I drew myself up and banged the sword on the table. Storming out, I called, "See you at lunch."
