My waffles were soggy, covered in syrup, and utterly disgusting.
My friend, Amethyst, frowned at her identical waffles.
"She can do better," she muttered.
I nodded in agreement. "Dump them?"
Amethyst gave me an odd look. "Duh."
We walked our lunches to the trash and emptied our boxes.
"I'm not the one who will break the news to your mom about her terrible cooking," Amethyst admitted.
We walked into the hallway. "She's your mom as much as she is mine," I retorted.

Amethyst's mom died when she was four. I never got to meet her, but Amethyst was my best friend, so my mom took her in.
Amethyst flipped me off, a sign that she was not telling my mom. Well, I wasn't either.
A blasting scream filled my ears, startling me. I looked up to see Amethyst changing the time on her watch and cursing.

She took my hand and ran fast.

"Wha-" I barely got that out before Amethyst was whipping me around another corner, knocking the breath out of me.
Two girls jumped in front of us from nowhere that I could see. Amethyst launched in front of me, letting go of my hand. I peeked out from behind her.

One girl had fiery red hair. Her tunic, longer than most others, was swirled with a mix of black and red. A black cape framed her body. Boots with a hilt sticking out from each one protected her feet.

But the other girl caught my attention. A golden breastplate with pieces of metal hanging down to protect her rear, hips, and crotch.
Her brown hair swept down her face, framing eyes that were stormy-gray. Black eyeliner lined them perfectly. Her boots also had knive hilts coming from them, but she also weilded a sword at her hip and a bow and arrows at her back.

She sent me a cold smile, and my heart fluttered, paired with a shudder.

Gray-eyes unsheathed her sword, revealing silver metal inscribed with a language I couldn't read.
Amethyst quickly changed the time again, something I constantly teased her about doing. I felt the air around me shift.
Amethyst leaped from in front of me, launching at the girls.

In absolutely no time, she was cornered. So, I did something stupid.
I swept from the bubble of air that I suddenly realized had been protecting me. The redhead instantly twirled around to face me, swooping a knife at me. I held up my arms to protect my head.

I heard a scream.
Not mine.
I looked forward and saw the redhead with the knife she threw at me stuck in her eye
