Janet
"Okay, Eissa. Blowout the candle." I mimicked blowing and he laughed before smashing his hand in the cake. "No, I wanted a nice picture before you did that."

"Calm down, baby. This is nice. Look." Denzel showed me the picture and it was in fact cute. He caught it right before Eissa smashed the cake.

"Good." Eissa continued to smash the cake and laugh before licking his hands. Naturally, it got all over his face. "Awww. Look at your face." He laughed harder as I kissed his cheeks. "Happy Birthday." He touched my face with cake all over his hands and I laughed. I sat him in his high chair and let him go crazy. He ate and smashed and ate again. He was so happy.

"Look at him." said Denzel.

"I know, he's so adorable." He looked down at his phone. "Is everything okay?"

"Hmm....oh yeah. Everything's fine. Let's get him ready for the beach." He walked off towards the bedroom. I was a little suspicious, but I trusted him. He wouldn't do anything to hurt me.

"Come on, my little prince. Let's go swimming." I picked him up and went to the bedroom.

"I've told you to not call me." I heard Denzel whisper.
"If she gets suspicious then it's your fault." I heard another muffled voice on the phone. "Look, I told you one time and that was it. We're not doing this again."
The voice sounded angry. "I don't care. I'm not losing what I have because of you. Stop calling me." He hung up and turned around. He released a breath and his eyes connected with me. He instantly tensed up.
"Bab..."

"Let's just go to the beach." I took Eissa into the bathroom to clean him up and closed the door. I didn't want to believe what I had heard, but I couldn't stop my mind from running rampant.

"Don't be scared." I lowered Eissa to the water and he lifted his feet. "Sweetie, it's just water, you like water."'I tried to lower him again and he lifted his feet. "How about this?" I sat down in the low part and put him on my lap. The water hit my legs and his feet. He whined a little at first but then laughed and started kicking the water. After a while, he leaned forward and started splashing. "See, I told you." I watched him play.

"Hey, Janet." I rolled my eyes as Denzel spoke to me.

"Hmm."

"I'm going to get something to drink and eat out of the house. You want..."

"No, I'm fine."

"Are you..."

"Yes. Go ahead." He sighed and walked away. I knew I should let him explain, but my mind doesn't want to know right now. Not knowing is better.

I've been through too much and I didn't want to ruin my baby's first birthday by getting in an argument. Plus, with everything I've gone through this past year, anything else bad happening wouldn't even surprise me. It's just the way my life goes. "Mama." I looked down at Eissa.

"Look at you." He had crawled out of my lap and sat in the water. I held him so he would go under. As I watched him, I didn't care what happened anymore. I have my baby and that's enough for right now.

Denzel
I leaned against the counter as I regretted everything. I should've never answered Alex's call. Now Janet's mad at me. She always drags me into some bullshit. Why did I answer her call? "Hey." I looked up and saw Janet holding Eissa.

"Hey."

"So, Eissa and I are going to get cleaned up and do some shopping."

"You want me to..."

"No. You stay here. Someone may call." She stared at me a little before walking off to the room. I could tell she was hurt and I had to explain things to her. It's not what she thought but how do I convince her of that.

I looked at my phone as it rang again. I groaned when I saw it was Alex again. "What?"

"Denzel, I need to talk to you. It's serious."

"Alex, I have told you. How many times do I have to tell you? Leave me alone."

"But Denzel, please."

"What could you possibly want? Haven't I already done enough for you?"

"Yes, but I still need you to..."

"Denzel, we're leaving." I hung up when I heard Janet's voice.

"Janet, wait." She turned around and looked at me.

"Denzel, please. I'm trying to enjoy my son's first birthday. Don't ruin it." She went to the door but I blocked her from leaving.

"Just listen to me."

"I don't feel like it and frankly I don't need to."

"Yes, you do because you're jumping to conclusions." She looked at me. "Can I at least go with you?"

"No." I reached for the door and I grabbed her wrist. She immediately froze and looked at my hand. "Let go of me." She whispered.

"Janet, just..."

"Let me go." I removed my hand and she looked up at me. I moved to the side and she walked out. I really messed up.
