when ruby approaches the restaurant she immediately spots her friend, perched at one of the outdoor tables looking more gorgeous than ever.
"josephine." she calls in a sing-song voice, dragging out the 'e' at the end of her name.
josie looks up from her phone and smiles, standing to wrap ruby in a warm embrace. "hello my beautiful lady, i was starting to think you bailed on me."
"sorry, my mom called about a package right as i got here and i couldn't get her off the phone. you know how she is." ruby replies as she pulls away.
josie nods at this. "angela does love a good chat."
they take their seats, the afternoon breeze lifting the hair off of the back of her neck. one thing she loves about living in california is the weather, especially this time of year.
the waiter comes out a moment later and they place their orders, chatting about everything and nothing all at once. by the time he comes back with their food, ruby has tears in her eyes from laughing so hard.
"thank you." they both say in unison as he sets their plates down.
"my pleasure, ladies." he replies, his gaze lingering on josephine before he finally walks away.
