Chapter Five

Four months later

The team had just gotten back to the bullpen after a rough case. That's when Kai's phone rang, it was the hospital. He pulled the phone from his pocket and answered it. "Hello?"

"Mr. Holman, I am calling to let you know that Ms. Whistler is in labor." A nurse said on the other end of the line.

"Already!" Kai spluttered out, nearly dropping his phone.

The nurse was silent for a moment, typing something on the computer. "Yes, she's been in labor for a few hours, but didn't want to call until she was further along."

"I'm on my way." Kai said, grabbing his jacket and car keys and running for the door.

"Kai!" Jesse called after him, the rest of the team following him in concern. "What's going on?"

"She's in labor." Kai yelled back as he raced towards the stairs, the elevator would take too long.

The team was quick to follow him, even Ernie.

By the time they reached the hospital, Kate was ready to push. Only Kai and Lucy were allowed in the room, so the others were waiting in the waiting area.

Kate was tense as she tried not to push until Kai and Lucy arrived.

Lucy lingered by the door while Kai rushed straight to the bed and took Kate's hand.

The blonde glared at him briefly before releasing the breath she was holding. "Luce." She called out, holding her free hand up.

Lucy hesitated by the door. She didn't want to crowd Kate.

"Please?" Kate breathed out, staring at Lucy, she gripped Kai's hand as another contraction hit.

Lucy bit her lower lip and made her way over to the bed, taking Kate's hand.

"Are we ready to go?" The doctor asked, he was sitting at the end of the bed on a stool.

Nodding her head, Kate took a deep breath.

"Okay, you can push now." The doctor said with a smile.

The blonde cried out and gripped Lucy and Kai's hands as she pushed.

After a few more pushes, Kate finally relaxed against the bed as a soft cry filled the room.

"It's a girl." The doctor said calmly, holding the baby up. "Who's cutting her cord?"

Kate looked up at Kai, nodding her head towards him.

Kai stepped forward and cut the cord.

Turning away from them, the doctor passed the baby girl to a nurse who quickly cleaned her up, put a diaper on her, and wrapped her in a warm blanket.

Kate was watching the nurse tiredly. Only looking away when the doctor asks her to push to get rid of the after-birth.

Kai leaned down to kiss Kate's forehead. "Well done." He whispered.

Kate looked up at him through tired eyes as a nurse cleaned her off before the baby was laid in her arms. The little girl had Kai's complexion and golden brown eyes, but her hair color was a mixture between blonde and brown.

"Nalani." Kate breathed, looking down at the little girl. "Nalani Grace."

The baby shifted slightly, turning her head towards Kate's chest and closing her eyes.

"She's perfect." Kate whispered, looking up at Kai before looking at Lucy.

Lucy looked down at the baby, swallowing thickly.
