"Aviana DeRouge," Professor McGonagall called, her voice loud and powerful across the huge room, and I heard various whispers start up. I had been here for a half an hour, and yet most people already knew of me. New record.
"That's the girl who knew the Patronus Charm on the train!"
"I heard she's even way smarter than Hermione Granger,"
"You know she's not only a Metamorphmagus, but part Veela?"
"And she's from America!"
The students were already talking about me, and I couldn't help but feel slightly happy, as it was positive talk for the most part. At least, I couldn't hear anything negative yet.
I walked past all of the short kids, most of them trembling with fear and nervousness, and stepped up towards Professor McGonagall. I sat on the stool, which was even quite tall for me, and she gave me a brief, tiny smile before setting the sorting hat on my head.
Looking out on the room, four tables were holding different sections of students. Their robes were similar, but with small color differences, and the colors matched different flags hanging above the tables. There was a green one with a snake, Slytherin, a yellow one with a badger, Hufflepuff, a red one with a lion, Gryffindor, and a blue one with a bird, Ravenclaw.
"Hmm.... Very interesting," the hat said, slightly startling me, and I sat completely still. All of my muscles were tensed, and I blinked very slowly, clearing my mind. The hat just chuckled in response, a deep, throaty sound in my ear.
"I wouldn't say Slytherin, you're much too kind for that, even if you try to seem tough," he stated, and I rolled my eyes. "You are very ambitious, though, and that house has the potential to be good for you...." it said, its voice old and gravelly. "Hufflepuff doesn't seem right, either, as your brains keep you from being completely nice all the time, and you aren't very caring for people in general. Only your close friends, the ones who you really care about," it continued, and I let out a small laugh. Isn't that the truth. "You would be a better fit in a different house," it babbled, and I thought about the twins. They're in Gryffindor, and so is Lee, so don't I want to be with them?
It would be easier adjusting, that's for certain. I already knew them.
"Ravenclaw or Gryffindor? The question is a good one. You're extremely intelligent, but brave and strong. You're a mix of your parents..... And either house would be good for you," it continued, slowing down. At least a minute had to have passed, and everyone was staring at me, more curious than before.
"Your intelligence is baffling. You're wise beyond your years, and learning is a strong point. The others in that house could help hone your wits, is that what you want?" he asked, and I groaned mentally.
"Yeah, I do, but does that mean nobody in Gryffindor is smart? Could they help me too?" I whispered extremely quietly, not letting my lips move so nobody would see me conversing with a hat.
"Ah, there are some smart people in Gryffindor, but they are all brave. I seem to be coming to what house you really, truly belong in," it said, before starting to mumble to itself. It was a slight hum, and I couldn't make out the words that the hat was saying. It was frustrating, I wanted to know what was going through its mind if it could see what was going through mine.
"You are a mix of your parents, as I said before. You are smart, but also very, very brave, and you brought up a valid point. You resemble your mother on the outside, but on the inside, and that's what really counts, you are more of your father," it finally said after about two minutes of the mumbling. "Do you know what that means?"
"Does it mean I'm dumb? Because if I'm not like Mom on the inside, and she was smart, you get what I'm saying?" I asked sarcastically, and there were a couple chuckles from the kids in the front that could hear me.
