Leon stood next to Claire atop one of the large buildings, her stomach bulging in her jacket.
Claire grunted, leaning on a wall. With concern in his eyes, Leon put a hand on her shoulder.
"You alright?" Claire turned to Leon, gazing into his eyes.
She nodded, chuckling anxiously. "Y-Yeah. They're just a little restless. Kicking about, you know."
"Alright, just...tell me if you need anything." Leon turned to leave when Claire took one of his hand into her own.
"Stay with me for a while." Leon raised an eyebrow. "We came to Paris to relax. Even though...life had other ideas."
Leon intertwined his fingers with that of Claire's, a soft smile etched on his lips.
"And you want to spend a moment t enjoying the lights."
Claire giggled. "Mhm."
Leon playfully rolled his eyes. "Alright. Lead the way, M'lady."
Claire smiled, pulling Leon toward the edge of the building. In the distance lay a tower of lights surrounded by thousands of smaller lights.
"Do you think Nicholas will like them? The baby, I mean," Claire asked, laying her head on Leon's shoulder, holding his arm .
Leon raised an eyebrow before turning away for a moment to think.
Flash
Leon stood on the front porch of his house, gazing into the distance, watching the trees sway in the wind, a thunderous chorus of leaves filling the air.
Leon gently twitched, hearing something behind him. Standing still, he focused on the sound of sliding socks.
Too late did his response come, for a five year old jumped onto his back.
"Gotcha!"
"Ooh noo, you got me. What ever shall I do?" Leon asked, playing along with his son.
"I finally snuck up on you!"
"Yes, you did." Leon chuckled, taking Nicholas into his arms, holding him close. "There you go, buddy!"
"You're really strong!" Nicholas exclaimed with joy.
"Well, yeah. I gotta protect you and your mom, and to do that I have to be really strong."
"But Mommy says she can handle herself."
"I know, but sometimes, Mommy can get in really bad trouble sometimes and need my help."
Nicholas gasped. "Really?"
Leon nodded. "Mhm. And mommy tends to get into a lot of trouble." Leon mentally sighed and thought, "too much too often."
"Oh...is she okay?" The five-year-old asked with a bit of worry in his voice.
"Yep, and daddy isn't able to be there to protect her all the time, so..."
"I get it now! Ooh, can I have a grilled cheese?"
Leon chuckled and set his son on the ground. "Alright. Go sit at the table and I'll be in there in a minute."
Nicholas threw his hands in the air, shouting "yes" before running back into the house. Leon shook his head with a smirk. "You and your grilled cheese." Looking back into the distance, he gazed upon the mountains, a soft breeze blowing through his hair.
"Take care of my sister, Leon."
Leon smiled at the memory. Turning back to the door, he went inside and made his way into the kitchen.
"Alright, what-"
"Mozzarella!"
Surprised, Leon didn't respond for a moment before smiling. "Mozzarella it is."
Patiently waiting in his seat, Nicholas asks, "could I have a brother?"
Leon stopped, freezing at the thought. Slowly turning to his son, he asks, "Why?"
Nicholas shifts slightly in his seat, nervously tapping his fingers together. "I have no one to play with."
Leon turned to son, placing a plate on the table. "What about the neighbor's down the street?"
Nicholas looked up at his father. "They don't like me."
Leon pulled one of the chairs out and took a seat. "You don't know that. Have you tried talking to them?"
Nicholas looked down at his food, closing his eyes as though he remembered something very hurtful.
"What'd they say?" Leon asked, picking up on his son's pain.
"They called me a freak."
Confused, Leon tilted his head a little. "Why did they call you a freak?"
"They saw my hair and my eyes."
"Oh...I see."
"Yeah. I don't like them either. They're not nice to anyone."
Leon sighed. "Are you sure you want a baby brother or baby sister?"
Nicholas turned to his father and smiled. "Yep!"
Leon chuckled nervously. "I'll talk to mommy about it."
"Really? Awesome!"
Flash
Leon was snapped out his thoughts when Claire gently shook his arm.
"Oh, right. Sorry. What was the question again?"
Claire rolled her eyes. "I asked you do you think Nicholas will like the baby."
"Oh. Right." Leon smiled, reverting back into old position as Claire's shoulder pillow. "I think he'll love them."
