Chapter 18
The doctor’s surgery had called just after nine this morning, when I answered my mobile I had no idea who it was, so to say I was surprised was an understatement. They had called to book a check-up to make sure everything was alright since the miscarriage, I had managed to get an appointment for early this afternoon which was lucky.
When I told Nath he said he'd go with me no matter what, ever since I’d heard the song he'd wrote I felt like something had changed between us, but it was a good change. Since we both woke up before Jay and Megan we decided to make them both breakfast in bed to say thank you for putting up with us. Nath raided the fridge getting out all the ingredients and I began slicing the tomatoes and telling Nathan to put the bacon on some foil under the grill, while I fried the eggs. He managed to do what I asked which was a good step for him to say his cooking skills were possibly the worst in the country. As I finished putting the bacon, toast, beans, hash browns, sausages and tomatoes on the plate for a full English breakfast (Well Megan’s did anyway – Jay’s just consisted of veggie sausages, tomato, beans, toast, eggs and hash browns) Nathan made two mugs of tea and walked in their bedroom before me to wake them up and let them know breakfast was on its way.
Nath was laughing at something jay had said when I walked in with the tray, Megan was still adjusting to everything and Jay’s curls were all over the place. “Hey we made this to say thanks” I smiled handing them the tray, they took it gratefully and dug in with eager eyes. Since I had done most of the cooking Nathan offered to do the washing up – well put all the dirty things in the dishwasher anyway – I couldn’t refuse the offer so went to finish getting myself ready for the day.
Time crept closer and before I knew it Nathan and I were in the car on the way to the doctors, we had decided to go back to our own flat tonight so we had piled all our bags of things in the boot so we could go straight there on the way back without having to disturb Jay and Megan again. I was nervous about the appointment, I mean I know the doctor had said before that things would go back to normal, but what if he was wrong? What if he found some sort of problem or something?
Nathan’s hand entwined with mine as we sat in the waiting room after signing in, other people were sat around us with similar facial expressions, but it wasn’t like I’d expect them to be jumping for joy. The small circles Nathan drew on my palm as we waited for my name to be called out were what kept me calm, I think I would have driven myself crazy if I had to go through this on my own.
“Miss Fleming” the nurse called out holding a clipboard, I stood up Nathan getting to his feet with me, I took one final deep breath before walking into the room. The doctor sat by his computer, once he heard us walk in he turned round and smiled, “How are you Lauren?” he asked moving his chair close until he was on the left side of the bed, Nathan still holding my hand on the right.
“I’m not too bad” I muttered putting on a fake smile, it wasn’t like I was going to say I was jumping for joy because really I wasn’t. “Alright, well I just want to run a few tests, make sure everything’s looking alright” he informed and I nodded, the doctor quietly spoke to the nurse about what tests he was going to do, though I couldn’t quite tell what he was saying.
A few minutes later the doctor returned his attention back to me, smiling at Nathan as he spoke. “I just want to do a scan to have a little look” he informed, putting on that cold jelly I’d had to see Bubba before. When the picture came on the screen I was half expecting to see the shape of Ella still there, but there was nothing, just an empty space of where she should have been. The doctor must have seen something different because he nodded, “I thought I might see this, see here” he said pointing to a small blob on the screen that I hadn’t noticed before, I nodded as did Nathan though I was slightly worried about what he might say. “When you had the miscarriage some of the placenta was left behind, before you can think about conceiving again we’ll need to get rid of it. It’s a very simple and easy method, all you have to do is take a tablet and about fifteen minutes later it’ll be flushed out” it sounded absolutely disgusting, it really did. Nathan scrunched up his nose obviously pleased in a way that he didn’t have to go through it, but I was pleased myself that it didn’t involve any other methods or needles – I couldn’t stand needles.
“Ok” I nodded, might as well get it over with. He went over to a cupboard and pulled out some tablets handing me one. “If you take it now with some water” he said and the nurse handed me a plastic cup “I’ll finish running the other tests and then the fifteen minutes should be up” I nodded again, plopping the small white tablet into my mouth and drenching it with water until it had submerged into digestive system.
The next few tests were just to check my health with things such as blood pressure and my heart rate, all the tests came back fine so the only thing left for me to do was go to the toilet. Great. I really wasn’t looking forward to it, I mean it would be great to know that once it was over Nath and I could conceive again, but it was just going to be going through it.
Nath waited in the waiting room after making sure I was alright to do it, I nodded and I think he was relieved in so many different ways. I did as the doctor said and when I walked out the bathroom five minutes later that was it, all evidence that I had ever been pregnant had gone.
The doctor said I was good to go and that I should be alright to conceive now, I felt overjoyed that the whole thing was over. As soon as Nathan saw me walk back out of the doctor’s office he stood up smiling. “Is everything ok?” he asked taking my hand as we walked out, he pulled his grey hood up as it had begun to rain. “Yep, everything’s fine now” I grinned with a wide smile, I had put everything behind me and was now just looking at the present and future.
“Good” he smiled simply, I glanced up at him as we walked towards the car, and I really had found the most amazing sloth. Everything about him drove me crazy (in a good way) whether it was what he said, he did, his voice when he sang, his piercing eyes, his button nose, even those caterpillar eyebrows! “What?” Nathan asked when he noticed my gaze had been on him for slightly too long. “Can’t I just admire the view?” I teased, his cheeks ever so slightly turned a light shade of pink, “You can do that anytime you want Lau” he joked flirtatiously. I laughed long with him as we slid into the car and began the usual route back to the apartment.
“Hold up Nath, we need to get some food to stock up on” my thoughts went to our empty fridge and he nodded taking a sharp turn so we were now heading in the direction of the nearest supermarket.
Once we’d parked in the busy car-park to the supermarket we fished our pockets for a pound to put in the trolley before we could begin strolling down the aisles. We got various bit and bobs, magazines, fruit and vegetables, milk, bread, eggs, bacon, crisps, pizza, chocolate, alcohol, butter, tea bags, and coco pops. We got various other things too so by the time we loaded everything into the car boot we had seven bags full of stuff.
It didn’t take us long to drive home and dump all the shopping bags on the table so we could unpack, it felt so good to be back here with Nath. It felt like we hadn’t been here for so long, it was like when you had just got back from a holiday and you just wanted to go round each room to check everything was the same, before sitting down on the sofa with a cup of tea and flicking on the news. We didn’t do that though, instead we put all the shopping in the appropriate places, munching on some digestive biscuits as we went. As Nath made us both a nice cup of tea I took our clothes bags and either put them away in the wardrobe or in the washer if they were dirty.
At first I had found it really weird being independent after relying so much on my parents, but it had all come some natural. I remember being really scared at first at everything moving on and changing, but now I’d come to realize that I loved how things had turned out, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A/N – Ah! Right firstly sorry it’s 3 days late, I’ll explain in a minute. If it’s not up to my usual standard sorry about that too, but enjoy never the less! Comment, vote, fan and I’ll see you next Friday!
So yeah I was at a One Direction gig Wednesday (it was so good! I know there’s all this hate between the two bands but personally I love them both. Their concert was amazing, I witnessed some truly amazing things while I was there!) And Thursday I was at a Bastille gig (that was also amazing! By far the craziest gig I’ve ever been to! 3 girls got pulled out the mosh pit because they fainted!) But yeah I had two very amazing days and I’ve been so tired because of them. Usually I start writing the next chapters on Wednesday and finish them on a Thursday, but I wasn’t able to do that this week…
OHH and I found this amazing video earlier today of Nath singing back in 2008 at a showcase before he was famous, let me just say even back then his vocals were off the roof. The video is at the side and the vocals really hit off at about 2:30! :D x
