Chapter 26

I don’t know how time has gone by so quickly, I’m now eight months along! I’m honestly freaking out inside so much, not just at the fact at how big I’ve got and how everything has gone to plan so far, but also at the fact that in a months’ time we will have a baby. My own child. Part of me still feels like a child myself, I don’t think I’ll actually feel like a proper adult until I’ve got another life to look after. Doing Nathan’s laundry and washing the pots didn’t really make me feel grown up, sure it made me feel independent, but there was a big difference between the two.

I was now limited to shuffling everywhere while Nathan did the majority of things around the house, not that I minded, it was quite nice to see him wandering round with a hover and taking the washing in and out the machine, at least I knew he could work the things. I couldn’t say the same about his cooking though, the best I was ever going to get from him was some toast, a cup of tea and some bacon and sausages, and even then they would be slightly crispy.

The boys were taking Nath out to the pub in a bit since Nareesha had arranged a baby shower for me, she wanted it to be an all-girls thing and I wasn’t complaining. If the boys were there god knows what would happen. The party (if you could call it a party) was going to consist of me, Megan, Nareesha, Kelsey, Michelle, Jayne, my mum, auntie, and grandma, and also Nathan’s mum, aunt and gran too. It would be a full house, but I was looking forward to it very much!

With everyone due to arrive in an hours’ time I was shooing Nathan around the apartment with a hoover so it would look a bit more presentable, I mean it wasn’t too much of a mess to begin with, (amazing right?) but there was always room for improvement. I put a few snacks in the oven and got some mini cakes out setting them out on a plate since I wanted to do something, and that’s about as much as Nathan would let me do. He still got paranoid sometimes that we would have a repeat of last time and be sent back into a wave of depression, and while I too sometimes had to same worries I was making sure I did everything in my power to stop that from happening, and so far it had worked.

“Lau where’s the spray to clean the windows?” Nathan shouted from the bathroom, I have no Idea why he was looking in there. “It’s in the kitchen cupboard with all the other cleaning supplies” I shouted back, a few minutes later he appeared with a wink. I handed the spray and a kitchen towel and he thanked me with a brief kiss on the cheek before going to clean the windows, nicely.

The apartment actually looked presentable by the time the doorbell rang, the nibbles were still in the oven with five minutes left and Nathan was in the hallway putting his coat on ready to meet the rest of the gang.  I opened the door revealing Nareesha, she had a gift in her hand and a smile on her face, a nice way to greet someone I must add. “Hey Lau looking good” she winked before looking over and shouting to Nathan, “Siva and the rest of the boys are waiting in the car for you Nath” he nodded muttering something about needing the toilet and grabbing his wallet, honestly he was never on time, he needed to get a grip of time management!

As he left Nathan's mum, aunt and gran arrived, he kissed them all briefly on the cheek telling them he’d see them later before running with his shoe laces undone to the awaiting car of four impatient boys. Honestly, he tells me I need to watch my safety (which I totally understand), and then he goes running down some stairs with his shoe laces un-done – an accident waiting to happen.

Half an hour later and everyone had arrived, we were all laughing and gossiping, not just about babies but about anything that came to our minds, the weather being one. It was summer and there were winds of up to fifty miles an hour, and hailstones, honestly, I bet the North Pole has a nicer summer than England.

I shoved a chicken bite in my mouth coated in ketchup (blame the cravings) while Kelsey shoved the first of the gifts in my hands. Lucky me. I looked at the tag and saw that Tom had scrawled his and Kelsey’s initials on it with what appeared to be a heart, I chuckled as I began to tear the paper off, no doubt he had wrapped it too since it seemed to be more tape than paper. As I tore it off it revealed three bags of nappies, a handbook for first time parents, and a set of three dummies, I thanked her with a hug and put them to one side as I got handed another from Megan – and Jay. I knew whatever theirs would be it would be wacky, and it was. They had gotten us a soft toy lizard – with the name tag Neytiri, a stress ball, and a baby grower with the slogan ‘I’m with the band’ which was really cute, the writing was in red so I took it as being unisex.

I ended up with a lot of nice things to add to our baby collection, it included more nappies and dummies, soft toys, blankets, a potty, some cream for stretch marks (thanks mum), a few clothes that were suitable for any gender and finally a photo album so we could put lots of pictures together once the baby was born. I shed a few tears (being an emotional wreck that I am), and gave everyone a massive hug, I loved them all so freaking much.

We decided to leave all the gifts in the lounge so that Nathan could have a look at what we’d got and we could arrange it together in the nursery. We hadn’t changed much since we lost Ella and learnt the news that I was expecting again, I don’t think either of us really had the nerve to change anything about it, we still wanted to keepher in our memory even if we physically never got the chance to meet her. Since Megan was really talented when it came down to art we’d gotten her to paint a red rose in the corner of the room next to the dresser, just so we’d be reminded at how precious life really was.

I went and helped myself to a bar of chocolate from the kitchen cupboard to cheer myself up so I wouldn’t be consumed with depressive thoughts, it worked too. Soon enough we were laughing at stories Nathan’s mum was telling us about from when Nathan was a baby. I particularly liked the one about how he somehow locked himself in the bathroom and couldn’t open it again so his dad had to go up some ladders, take the window off and climb in just to unlock the door, it was something I could see him do now, and I’d get a phone call from him saying he was locked in, I chuckled at the thought.

Nathan got back at five, everyone else had left by then. My family had gone out to dinner (I didn’t feel like going out) and the others all had stuff to do so I was left looking at everything in detail as I waited for him to get back. He was slightly overwhelmed at all the stuff we had got, so was I to be honest; I had just expected a few nappies and toys. “I can’t wait to see our little Babba in this” Nathan chuckled holding the baby grower up that Jay had got us, I laughed nodding along. We hadn’t bought ourselves to calling the baby Bubba, I think it was because we’d given Ella the nick-name. Nathan had come out with it one day and it had just stuck, imagine being seventeen and your parents calling you Babba, I would have to make sure the nickname stuck because I wanted Nath and I to be the world’s most embarrassing parents, it was funny to see other people squirm in a situation.

We decided to put everything away in the nursery, Nathan carried and moved everything while I stood in the corner pointing my finger at where I wanted stuff to go. It was funny. He was like my puppet, and I was pulling the strings. He did it without any arguments anyway so I took it as a sign that he didn’t mind.

Later that night we lay half asleep on the sofa watching 'The Apprentice', I don’t really know why it was on since the people in it always seemed to annoy me, the remote was on the other side of the room though and neither of us wanted to move since we were so tired. Nathan was knackered because he’d done a lot of manual labour today (his words not mine), and carrying another person inside you seemed to drain you of energy too, not that I minded it let me curl up against Nathan’s chest.
