"Dude! Would you cheer up?", Sky says exasperatedly.
" What? What am I doing?", I ask.
"All your frowning and depression is raining on my parade, yo", she says with a smile to which I return.
We're in the line at McDonalds and when we finally make it to the front we order and pay for our McFlurries then head to sit down.
"So ...", Sky drawls out.
"So ...", I drawl out just to tease her. She sticks her tongue out at me and we giggle. After a while of comfortable silence, Sky seems to be in her 'thinking mode' so I take a bite out of my ice-cream. Her face suddenly turns into a frown that has me thinking of the worst. Yep, that's me. The pessimist.
"What?", I ask her cautiously.
"How are things with you?", she asks.
"What?", I ask her.
"You know ... at home", she says .
Well I wasn't expecting that.
"Good", I reply while nodding my head and she rolls her eyes at me.
"Oh please. Try lying to someone who hasn't known you your whole life", she says. She's right, she does know me for a long time. Twelve years to be exact.
"It's fine, she's fine. Same old, same old", I say.
She gives me a sad and understanding smile. She, along with half the town knows about moms condition. Although I don't want to admit it but I know she doesn't have long to live. The cancer is getting worse. Just thinking about her is bringing tears to my eyes and one slips out which has Sky immediately by my side.
"Aww, babe. It's going to be okay. I promise", she say while hugging me.
"I hope so", I reply. I have to be strong, if not for me then for mom. Sky's parents are paying for her treatment because we can't afford it and sometimes she stays with me. We're basically sisters, her parents call me their second daughter and my mom says the same about Sky.
"Do you want to get out of here? Go to the park or something?", she asks. I nod and we head out to the parking lot and into her BMW. Her family is the richest family in town, both her parents are doctors. After ten minutes of driving we arrive at the park and I spring out of the car and head straight for the swing set. There's just something about swinging in the air that helps me breathe better, think better, live better. That is until I reach the ground and reality hits me in the face like a bitch!
"It's very empty today", Sky says while sitting in the swing next to mine.
"Yeah, no shiz captain duh", I say and she rolls her eyes and sticks her tongue out at me.
After a while of comfortable swinging and me softly singing 'Risk It All by The Vamps' I hear Sky gasp then squeal in my ear.
"What the f-", I start but she continues.
"Oh my gosh! That's Reece Parker!", she says and I roll my eyes at her excitement. She's had a major crush on him for three years.
"How do I look?", she asks.
"Beautiful. Now shut up before he hears you", I say.
Reece walks by with two of his friends and offers Sky and I a cute boyish 'what's up' nod then walks away, but not before I catch him wink at Sky. I wish Zak could like me the way I like him.
After an hour of Sky talking about how amazing Reece is and me listening to her it was getting dark so we decided to head home.
When we got to my place I jumped out and was about to walk away when Sky stopped me.
"Hey, will you text me on how moms doing? And give her my love, please", she says and I smile and nod at her.
"I will, and she loves you too", I say.
"Okay, thanks. Bye, love you.", she says.
"Bye, love you too", I say back and she drives off.
I enter the house and lock the door behind me then head up stairs straight to moms room. I find her fast asleep with the TV on and smile at how she looks like she's in so much peace. I head over to her and give her a kiss on her head then leave to go to my room.
As soon as I enter I jump on my bed with sleep pulling me in. What a long and shitty day. Thank the chocolate gods that tomorrow is Saturday or I don't know how I would of survived.
