Y/N's POV

I run across the road, heading away from the grocery store and towards our beautiful van. I slide open the door and see Lilly sitting on the floor, resting against the back of the seats, crocheting something.

"I'm back", I announce unnecessarily as there's no way I could enter without it being obvious.
"Welcome back, what'd you get?", she asked, not looking up from what she was doing.

"Milk, bread, chips, butter, the usual", I list as I put everything away. I toss her a bottle of iced tea and she finally looks up gratefully.
"You're an actual angel", she smiled.
"I know".

Me and Lilly had been living in our van now for about 5 months. I was earning enough money from selling jewelry online and Lilly was working towards getting an engineering degree.

Every week or so we would move to a different place, park up in the middle of a forest or somewhere overlooking the beach. We didn't need much and it worked out fine.

Currently we were along somewhere in Miami, but I think we both silently agreed we'd been here long enough.

"Oh my mother messaged me today", Lilly piped up as I sat on the bed, leaning up against the back doors.

I tilted my head slightly. "Why?".
"Just making sure we were both alive", she said, going back to her work. I hummed in response. The faint radio in the background started to crackle softly.

I open my own phone and see that my mum hadn't messaged me since her birthday 3 months ago when I sent her a 'happy birthday' text, and she responded with a 'thank you x'. I sighed and dropped my phone into my lap and picked up a book that I had started last night.

The words on the page seemed to move and wriggle about so I just stared blankly at the page. It wasn't that I missed my mother exactly. God knows she made my life hell after dad left us. But I do miss the relationship we used to have. I miss her hugs.

"She wants me to go to home for her birthday next week". Lilly said, coming up to join me on the bed, sitting cross-legged in front of me.
"Oh yeah, we can drive up tomorrow", I replied and she smiled at me.

"Thanks queen", she lay backwards over my legs, stretching out. "Pasta for tea?"
"Always".

The next morning we got up early to get on the road. Lilly offered to drive and I wasn't gonna just pass up the opportunity to be the passenger princess. I put on some AC/DC and kicked my feet up on the dashboard.

After about 2 and a half hours we pulled up in the same driveway I'd been at to pick Lilly up a few months ago.

"Are you staying with us?", she asked as we got out.
"Nah, I've got work to do so I'll probably just hang around somewhere nearby", I assured her and she gave me a hug.
"Okay, well you know you're always welcome".

"Thanks", I gave her a small, wrapped box that had my most recent earrings I'd made. "For your mum, tell her I said happy birthday".
"Will do", I hear Lilly say as I get in the drivers seat, she waves and I honk as I drive off.

When I get fully on the road, I turn the music right up. To be honest I don't think I could stand to see how close her and her mum were. Something about it hurts my heart.

I realise I'm biting the inside of my cheek and stop quickly. I see a nice little spot overlooking the ocean and park up. There's a cute little cafe on the other side of the road, and I decide to treat myself.
