POV Pete
It had now been two months since Vegas had woken up. He was still mostly bedridden, but he'd seemed in better spirits then he'd been. Macau came by everyday. He practically lived in Vegas's hospital room when he wasn't at school.
With Porsche taking over the minor family the brothers had lost their home. The main one anyway. Uncle Korn had offered up several of his other properties in the city, but Vegas had refused. He wanted nothing of his uncle's money, or his care. Plus he had more than enough money of his own. His father had always been one to spend his money as fast as he made it. Vegas had that tendency too, but as usual he was smarter about it. He had so many offshore accounts that he might be keeping entire banks afloat.
The brothers had settled on an apartment close to Macau's school. It was far removed from the ambiance that they were used to at their old home. I'd visited a few times, the peacefulness of the area, somehow, made my skin itch. I hadn't told Vegas that though.
It was about mid-afternoon and I'd come by with some food for Macau to eat and share. I'd opened the door to the room and saw a sight that made me sigh with a smile. Macau was asleep on the large corner chair.
I walk over and open the curtains of the large window that looks out high above the city below. I turn back and catch sight of Vegas watching me, a genteless playing across his worn features. I smile at him. "Are you up?" I ask him.
"For a while now." He replies. "And where have you been?"
I nod to the food bag that rests on the table at the end of his bed and walk over to it. "I bought some food for Macau." I inform him. "In case he wakes up and gets hungry. There's also yellow curry rice." I walk around his bed and find a seat on his mattress besides his legs.
He is silent for a few moments and then he speaks. "Why?" He asks me softly. "Why are you still here?"
I sigh inwardly. Vegas is not used to being wanted, or used to things that he cares for staying beside him. "I can't run off anywhere." I told him. Not when my heart is here with you, and yours with me. Vegas reaches his hand out to me and I take it. He rubs his thumb over the back of my hand and looks at me with resigned sadness.
"If you run now," He tells me. "I'm alright with that." I know that he means it, but not because he wants me to leave. "I"ve got nothing left. I don't want to be your burden."
He's giving me the out. Just like he did that night, and just like that night I don't take it. I scoot closer to him, smiling at him softly. I take his hand in both of mine, offering the comfort and reassurance that I can. "I just wanna follow my heart." I tell him honestly.
Vegas breath hitches and tears well up in his eyes as he looks at me. "From now on." He says. "You're no longer my pet. You're the most important person in my life." His words stitch up old wounds in my heart. Scars that, while they may never fade, are still healed.
I smile at him and Vegas reaches for me. His hand cups my neck gently and he brings my lips to his. This kiss is passionate in its gentleness. I return that passion to him, my heart and body heating up beneath his supple lips and heated caress. He pulls slightly away for only a moment and rests his forehead against mine. Because he is mine, just like I am his, and no one is going to take him away from me again. I reach for him wanting to feel more, scooting closer, and pulling his lips back to mine.
"There, there," a voice interrupts our make out session and I pull away from Vegas and shift to turn toward Macau who's gotten up from his seat and come over to us. "That's pretty fast." He teases us. "You're absolutely something." I can't help the rampant blush that blooms on my cheeks as I try to smile that old smile to hide my embarrassment. "Anyway, welcome to the family, my in-law."
