Chapter 21
I don't know exactly how long we drive. The town in upstate and I can't remember the name. Start with a I or maybe a T. We see a lot of cow and smell a lot of they shit on the way there, there so many field, and when we get there the town real small with one road that run through it that you can walk from one end to the other in half a hour and that road have a few restaurant and store on it and that about it and the few people there,(there not many car or people)I imagine them walking back and forth on that road all day for they whole life and if that is true and if they happy doing that then I guess that not such a bad thing. Even the stone is quiet there, from the concrete road and stone building to the rock lying on the ground, like from however long they been around, even they haven't seen much happen. The air is dead and there no tall building, you can see everything all around you, the sky and each person walking around or in they car, and I think nobody better not do anything wrong here because they get caught easy and me and the blonde find a motel on the main road that maybe a mile outside the tail end of the town where there really no people around, only car going by fast, and we get a room and stay in it for a week. The blonde, she excite like she think this place heaven and she wonder why she never move to a place like this before and one day she say, "Gotta live through hell so you can know heaven when you see it."
Using a big piece of the money the blonde have, but there still plenty enough left so we can eat and I can stay drink, we move into a big house even more far outside that little town and now we in a whole new kind of quiet where you can hear cricket and bug and there animal around like deer, skunk and raccoon, I even see some small animal on the side of the road, dead.
Even though we finally make it to her heaven, I start to really think she one of them people who can't never really be happy and I think that as sad as that dead animal I see on the road. She start to go into town like she looking for the same thing that drive her crazy, men, like she still need the misery she use to having to keep her alive. Like she just can't stop. She tell me them people here different, she even go out without her ugly face on like she just waiting for trouble to find her again and the people do stare but it like she something they can do without, or they afraid of her. Mostly they let her be. As for me I stay in the house mostly until it get real bad and I need to go somewhere, I just walk along the road, the car that pass by steer to the other side of the yellow line to get as far from me as possible, maybe because how I look, maybe because of how I stumbling, drink, like I wanna get hit. I think this place like a desert so you spend a lot of your time just waiting in between when you see another face.
One night, I watching Michael Myers killing people(I still don't understand how they put people getting kill on the TV for everyone to see)and she sitting on the edge of the bed with her back to me, she not looking at the TV, she just staring at the wall for a long time and I just staring at her back, taking a drink from the bottle sometime, and I thinking about everything she do to me and I thinking maybe we gonna be stuck here together forever and I think what Sherry like to say, "It doesn't matter."
I say, "What your name?"
After a whole minute, she say, "What?"
"Your name."
She say, "People have names."
Her voice make my hair stand up. There nothing there. I get a little scare. I think that probably what Michael Myers sound like if he ever speak. But he never do.
I get her to go somewhere with me. She don't say anything against it, she just get in the cab when it come way out where we live and way down the long driveway to pick us up. We going into that little town. The driver look at me and her the same way but he mind his business anyway. It dark in the taxi and dark all around except when we pass a car sometime. It about 8 O'clock at night, I just wake up a couple hour ago and I ask the driver what road we on and he say something like shore drive and then we riding next to some big river and he say there five of them that all line up with each other like they finger on someone hand.
