By the time I get to school, the flag ceremony is already ongoing. The principal is watching too. It's not a surprise, though. It's first day of school after all.
The pandemic messed up the school calendar a little, so school started on August 21st instead of the usual July.
I quickly enter our room, noticing the fact that there are way more seats than our room last year. That means there's more students, right? The lights and fans were off so I had to open them for a second as I put my things down.
There was an arrangement of wooden armchairs, 6 chairs in each row split into three in the middle, the very back row being only 3 seats at the right.
"Welcome to your first year in highschool." I whisper to myself.
I quickly get in line in the quadrangle while everyone was reciting Panatang Makabayan.
Unlike public schools, our quadrangle isn't so big, it was concrete and elevated to separate it from the school's hallway.
It was just enough to fit us high schoolers. The stairs going up to the library and HUMMS room, the business office up front near the gate, and I guess you can count the benches that's right under the stairs.
I look to my right and notice how many the boys were.
16 boys, 5 girls.
"Hi Ivy!" A returning classmate, Patricia, greets me as she hugs me tightly, literally while the ceremony was ongoing.
She has her curly shoulder length hair. She had a wolf cut, and in graduation her mom curled her hair, but it grew and since then it was never fixed.
"Hi." I chuckle awkwardly trying to pull away, but she wouldn't budge. "Get back in line, please?" I tell her. "Oh come on." She pouts and gets back to her line.
After the flag ceremony we all get inside the classroom. I get excited as I see a lot of familiar faces, but at the same time a lot of new ones.
Literally half of our class is made up of new students.
Me and my best friend, Lianne, or Laine Dela Cruz, take a seat beside eachother in the front row. I'm between two chairs, the right one with Laine, and the left one with our old classmate from 3rd grade. "Inah?" I exclaim quietly as I recognize her. "Hi." She smiles at us.
The classroom was freshly painted a light green, two blackboards over at the front with a TV. The sleek but visually textured beige floor, windows on both sides of the classroom, the left side having a view of the concrete halls of the campus.
"There's so many new people." Laine whispers to me. "Even almost all the teachers are new." I add.
Soon, our new advisor came in front of the classroom, she was wearing a pink blazer with a black top, they have bangs with their hair up in a ponytail. "Good morning, grade seven!" She greets us. "Good morning, ma'am!" We greet her back in unison.
Everyone's quiet at first, as always.
"So, I will be your new adviser for this school year, you can call me ma'am Marielle!" She says with a bright smile on her face.
"Okay so since I am not yet familiar with all of you..." She trails off, clasping her hands together as she looked around.
"Mag-introduce kayo isa-isa! [Introduce yourselves one by one!]" She exclaims as we start to get a little nervous.
