All my books hold a special place in my heart, but this one has especially been important to me. If you didn't know, I'm Vietnamese-American. For most of my life, I've had a very complicated relationship with my ethnic identity, so I never really thought of writing about a character with Vietnamese ancestors. But something about A New Dawn just felt like it needed that Vietnamese background. Lo and behold: I have my first Vietnamese-American character!
It was really fun and eye-opening to do all the research on Vietnamese (and Filipino) culture, too. I hope you learn something because I know I did.
As always, I hope you get something out of this book whether it's just a good story or a life lesson. :)
