The trees always seemed to flourish in my special place. Tall and green. It's the only place that can make me remember that not all aspects of my life suck. I sighed as I listened to the wind rustle the leaves connected to the the trees I held so dear. "Hello Frank." A voice I automatically recognized said.
"Hello Gerard." I acknowledge as I looked up to meet the gaze of the familiar stranger with his permanent cocky demeanor and cigarette occupied lips. As I looked closer at his face I noticed the bags under his eyes and his abnormal pale skin tone. He looked like total shit, that says a lot coming from me. Must be all the cigarettes.
"Staring is rude." He muttered then blew out a puff of smoke. While lost in my thoughts, I was staring intently at his face.
"Sorry! Didn't meant make you uncomfortable. Was just thinking." I defended. He smirked to himself as he took a drag of his cigarette.
"What were you thinking about?" He asked coming closer.
"I-I. I was wondering why you smoke so much. It's unhealthy you know." I lied. I don't want to bring up how horrible his health looked to prevent offending him.
He chuckled and took a drag from his cigarettes. "I know that wasn't what you were thinking about, but that's okay."
"You gonna answer my question?"
"I smoke because I like the self destruction."
"Why?" I asked actually concerned now. I don't know why I suddenly cared for this stranger. It's not like I owe him anything.
"Tell me Frank, has there ever been something you wanted nothing more to forget about, even if it was only temporary?"
My lips separated a little and my eyes traced down to the ground in front of me. I swallowed away the dry feeling in my throat, "Yes."
"Say someone gave you something that could give you transitory relief, and in return each time you used it only one year of your life would be taken away. Would you use it?"
I stared at Gerard with wide eyes. I watched him take a drag if his cigarette and blow the evidence of his slowly creeping death out into the open air.
"I-I don't know." When he puts smoking that way I didn't quite know what I'd do. Yes this way of thinking isn't exactly accurate, but I understood what he meant.
"Does that answer your question?" He breathed out roughly.
"Yes." My voice came out strained.
There was some silence between us that I want to stop, but I don't know what to say.
"What are you trying to forget?" I asked.
Gerard shook his head. Taking another drag. "I'm tying to forget about it, Frank."
"Can I try it?" I heard my self ask gesturing to the cigarette.
Gerard's squinted like he was desperately trying to read my mind. Without a word he handed it to me.
I stared at it feeling somewhat nervous. I placed it on my lips and sucked in. The foreign feeling was not favored by my body. I pulled it away as I began to cough hysterically.
Gerard took it back unamused. "Kids." I swear I heard him exhale before putting the cigarette to his lips once again. "You shouldn't let me influence you." He said.
I felt my eyebrows furrow in confusion. "What?"
"You heard me. I have bad habits. Don't let me rub off on you in any way." He ordered gesturing to the cigarette between his fingers.
"Just because I wanted to try smoking once doesn't mean I'm going to start. It also doesn't mean you caused me to want to try it. Besides, you let me." I argue.
Here's just sighed frustratingly. "Just please."
"Uh okay? Why are you like this all the sudden? Is it just because I asked for a drag?" My tone was slightly annoyed, but was overall just confused.
Gerard rolled his perfect fucking eyes and blew out another puff of smoke. "It's not what you did. It's more of what I did." He stated hesitant and unsure.
"Gerard, you do realize you're making no sense right?" I asked.
He laughed slightly to himself before nodding. "I Just don't always bring good news is all."
"What does that have to do with me exactly?" I questioned finally not feeling so confused as to why he's doing all this. He's concerned about me. He thinks he's bad for my wellbeing, and he probably is, but I don't care.
"It probably would be best for you to ignored me." This sentence sounded so forced. I know he doesn't want me to ignore him.
"It's okay Gerard. I choose to be here. With you."
"No Frank, It's not okay. You're not capable of making a clear decision; you're a kid." He put the cigarette in its previous place in between his lips.
"So are you!" I pointed out.
"I'm older." He contradicted.
"I don't care."
"You should." Gerard shook his head before turning and walking away.
"You don't want me to ignore you! I can tell." I screamed after him.
He stopped for a brief moment. I assume to debate wether or not to turn back around.
He said nothing; didn't even look back, then kept waking.
I watched him leave and I felt as if I lost an essential presence rather than an acquaintance. I shook off the feeling and attempted to contemplate something other than what just happened. I just couldn't get the Gerard out of my head...
I sighed, and ran a hand through my hair trying to think. A pet if me wondered if I had feelings for Gerard. I'd deny that fraction of with all my might if I do.
He's in his own little self involved bubble that represents how much he doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself.
Though in all honesty, what do I know? I've met this guy twice in a forest and he just left me alone because he thinks it's for my own good.
