Gulf of Mexico - 1713
A dark ship was anchored at the end of the Mississippi river, bobbing among the waves. At the shore, four men stood on the beach, watching it with a critical eye.
“Look at that,” the First Man said. “No flags or sails… seems to have floated in out of nowhere. A miracle ship.”
“But why is it just sitting out there?” the Second Man asked.
The Third Man shrugged, a smirk curving his lips. “Suppose we ought to find out, shouldn’t we?”
With the help of a rowboat, the trio set off. Padding together, it didn ’t take them long to reach the mysterious ship. It was much larger than it looked, yet as they began to explore it, the Trio discovered that it was empty.
No one was on board.
“Let’s see what’s below deck, shall we?” the First Man suggested.
The Third Man lit a lantern and held it high as the Second Man pulled at the trap door. Slowly, they descended into the darkness. The only sound they could hear was that of the slashing waves upon the bow of the ship.
It was unnaturally quiet.
The Third Man held his lantern as he walked, frowning with confusion. Boxes, barrels, and other cargo lined the walls of the open space, but there was no one around to tend to it.
“Where the fuck is everyone?” he asked aloud.
“Deserted most likely,” the First Man said. “Which makes everything in the hold legally forfeit.”
All three men grinned at each other and began to look around for the hidden treasures within.
One by one they opened boxes and crates, revealing glittering coins made of pure Spanish gold, the softest of sable furs, and the glossiest of silks and satins. There was also furniture, looking to have been made from France, or England, as well as uncut jewels and gemstones.
As the men helped themselves, the First Man saw something in the corner and beckoned his friends over.
“What do you make of that?” he asked, nodding to the corner.
The other two men turned to see two large black boxes, sitting on a raised platform.
No …they weren’t boxes, they were coffins. Luxurious coffins, with silver embellishments, and gold seas upon their tops.
“Jesus Christ…” the Third man whispered in shock and awe.
Slowly, the three approached the coffins and peered at them. At first, no one wanted to move, but the First Man motioned to the Second.
“Well?” he said. “Open the damn thing up.”
Although he was trembling, the Second man reached out and carefully undid the clasp on the side of the nearest coffin.
CLICK-CLICK!
When he lifted the lid, the man jumped back with a holler, the lid falling away to reveal a young man inside. In his heart was some kind of silver dagger, but it was the unnatural paleness, with grey veins that made the other men scream.
