So Little Time

They would be leaving soon. You got a call telling you so. In two days the boys would be taken from your house. You never liked seeing them go. And you probably wouldn't see them anytime soon after that. Soon enough they wouldn't need you to watch them anymore. When you thought about that you felt like you had just been slapped. You didn't want to see them grow up. They were your little children. And who would want to see their children grow up? Soon, they wouldn't need to rely on you for pretty much anything. They'll be able to take care of themselves. They'd be fighting wars soon enough. But they didn't know a thing. They were ignorant, little children. Ignorant of their futures and the hardships they would have to face. If you could, you would try to be there for all of them. You had to do something for them. Something... But what? There wasn't much time, so it had to be something small....
Just then, a small blond child entered the room. He held a polar bear in his arms and was rubbing his eyes. "Good morning Matthew," you said to him and he returned your greeting. You were going to miss this. Seeing these adorable faces in the morning just made your day. "I forgot where Kumajiji's food is," he said. So you got up and took him downstairs to show him. For the past few days the boys have been playing in the park. The snow started melting and there was barely any left, so they would be sad to see it go. Maybe you could bring it back, even if it were only for a short amount of time. Matthew tugged on your sleeve. You looked down into his big eyes. "What are you thinking about?" he asked. "A surprise," you told him. He smiled up at you. Goodness, he had to be the most adorable child you've ever taken care of. There were others of course, but he outshined them all. "Are the others awake?" you said as the boy walked back over to his polar bear. He shook his head. "No, not yet." You nodded and walked over to the refrigerator. Opening it, you saw the cupcake Oliver had given you. They've been in there for a week. Were they still any good? Were they any good in the first place....? You knew how Oliver worked. He might have done something to them, but then again.... You took one out of the refrigerator. Once again, your curiosity was getting the better of you. Kumajiro, now done eating, was taken back upstairs. Not that it was taken into account right away. Your thoughts were busy running rampant. What more could you possibly do for them? You were running low on ideas. Very low. Suddenly, something came to you. Quickly you ran upstairs, passing the boys on the way. They all looked at your room in confusion as you slammed the door, giggling like a small child.
