As the two got into San Francisco at midnight, nothing of interest happened that night. That morning, however, Inko was up with the sun (and the fog) and was moving boxes like her life depended on it. She had to wake up Izuku, who was out like a light and asleep like a corpse. Gotta get over that jet lag somehow.
After a good takeout breakfast, the two got to work, unpacking and moving furniture. Izuku's room was looking like home in a matter of around an hour, while the house was finished at around noon. By then, the two were sprawled out on the couch, watching the news.
"Izuku?" Inko asked. "Why don't we walk around a bit? I hear the Bay Area has some good stores around."
The two agreed to explore their neighborhood, as Izuku would be going to school the next day. Finally, not as weary from the ills of travel, they got a good look at their house. Due to Inko's newly increased paycheck, she had managed to settle into one of San Francisco's iconic painted lady houses. It was an easily recognizable lime green, with several windows out front. Their car sat in the garage, awaiting an hour-long commute to Silicon Valley every day. A fire escape led from the third-floor window, somewhere Izuku could see himself sitting out at night and looking at whatever stars would be visible at night. Probably not many, since light pollution is notoriously a bitch in cities like San Francisco.
The two walked around for quite some time, stopping by almost every store they found interesting. At one point, Inko entered a grocery store to get them some food while Izuku went to a nearby thrift store.
"Hi, welcome in!" the cashier chirped. The small store was empty, save for the unusually peppy cashier. Her eyes appeared iridescent and her choppy hair was dyed in garish rainbow stripes. Her outfit was so disorganized that anyone would think she just robbed a Hot Topic and wore every piece of loot to cover up the crime. Izuku started rummaging through the racks to find something he was interested in. "Anything in particular you're looking for?"
Izuku jumped back in surprise. The cashier was now behind him, grinning like the Cheshire Cat.
"Oh, um... just some, uh... t-shirts. I'm... starting school soon?"
"Ah, sick! Where're you going?"
"Uh..." This is a bad idea. "...Oceanside High?"
"Wait, oh my god, me too! If we're gonna be going to the same school, we should at least get to know each other a bit." The girl took a deep, dramatic bow. "Vivienne Rudd, at your service."
"Izuku Midoriya. I just moved here yesterday."
"Kickass name! Well, welcome to the Bay Area, Izuku. Where Karl rolls in in the morning and the sun sets under the bay at night."
"Uh... who's Karl?" Izuku asked sheepishly.
"Karl's what we call the fog over the bay. You have lots to learn, young Padawan," Vivienne snickered. "Anyways, you came here to shop, right? I'll be here at the register if you need help."
Izuku ended up buying around 50 dollars worth of clothes, mostly consisting of t-shirts, old jeans, and a pair of old red Converse. After meeting Inko outside another store, the two headed back home.
In Izuku's bedroom, the unopened care package from his friends sat on his bed. Mom probably moved it, he thought. He rummaged through a utility drawer until he found the trusty family box cutter. He carefully sliced open the box. Immediately, it popped open. The first thing to hit his eye was an envelope addressed to him, again, adorned with holographic All Might stickers. The letter read:
Hey, Midoriya!
This whole box was kinda thrown together last minute. We only had a day to pack stuff into this package, so it was kinda rushed. Sorry! Anyways, we packed this so that you could have a piece (or pieces) of Japan with you! We all hope you have a good time in San Francisco!
Miss you loads,
Your friends in Class 2A
P.S: The photo album was kinda rushed. My bad. -Tsuyu 𓆏Everyone in the class had signed the card. Somehow, they had even managed to convince Bakugo to sign it. Even a couple people from 2B (formerly 1B) had pitched in to sign the card. Before he started crying, he took out the contents of the box. On top was a small plastic baggie of konpeito candies. Yum. Underneath was a hand-knitted scarf, a cinnamon scented candle, and an All Might action figure. Specifically one he'd always had trouble finding: All Might's Golden Age costume. He set it on his shelf, next to the rest of his action figures. Also in the box was a new recipe for katsudon (courtesy of Sato), a box of matcha flavored rice cakes, and a framed photo of class 2-A, him included.
At the very bottom of the box was a binder with the label "memories ♡". Inside was a messy scrapbook with several printed photos of Izuku and his friends, all having fun together. There were photos from the Sports Festival, screencaps of news interviews, and of course, photos from outside school. Izuku couldn't stop smiling as he flicked through the scrapbook. It made him homesick, looking at how much fun he had back in Japan. He grabbed his phone from next to Matcha and texted the 2-A (plus him) group chat.
I got the care package! :)
and I nearly cried reading the scrapbook ;-;a/n: next chapter is the OC chapter. i tried to flesh them out as much as i could so they could all be memorable in one way or another. if you all want more details on my lovely little original characters, check out my book "the modern prometheus", which is just my OC book. the profiles are way longer and more detailed in there.
