Kaito laid in his hospital bed staring at the ceiling. The beeping of the heart monitor gave Maki at least some security, but that still wasn't enough to calm her down.
Maki just sat in a chair as she caressed Kaito's hand.
"It's okay, baby. I'm gonna be okay. We're gonna get through this together." Kaito said while stroking Maki's hand with his thumb.
Maki smiled as a couple of hot tears dripped down her face. Kaito brushed a tear drop under her beauty mark and put her cheek in his palm. "Don't cry, my little starfire. I'm not going anywhere, my sweet girl."
Maki's grin grew wider as she felt Kaito's warm hand against her soft, pale skin. This was all she could ask for. The fact that she was stuck in a crummy hospital was irrelevant at this point. She was just happy to be with Kaito.
"Have you considered any chemotherapy?" Maki asked before she gently kissed Kaito's fingertips.
Kaito shrugged, his cheeks glowing a bit from the kisses. "I know it's what's good for me, but I honestly think it's gonna be too stressful. I've done some research and I heard it's got some..." Kaito side-eyed the wall before staring back and Maki and clicking his tongue. "side effects..."
Maki shook her head as her little grin was slowly getting smaller with each excuse. "Of course you're gonna get side effects. It's a drug, you dumbass." Despite sounding a little harsh, Kaito could make out a chuckle in her tone. That's all Kaito wanted. Was to hear his starfire laugh again.
Kaito giggled and rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah, yeah."
He than looked up at Maki, his big purple eyes glistening like beautiful two amethysts. "Maki, roll... will you help me take chemo?"
Maki smiled and ruffled his hair. "Of course, baby."
Shuichi and Kaede walked into the hospital room. Kaede was smiling, but Shuichi's face was stained with old tears. Kaede rubbed Shuichi's back for reassurance. "You're okay, sweetheart." She whispered.
Shuichi felt his heart sink. He never seen his friend like this before. "Hey, Kaito." He said, wanting to cry. "I know I haven't been around a lot because of work, but—"
"No, no, no." Kaito interrupted.
Shuichi tilted his head in confusing as Kaito smirked. "You don't need to apologize for anything Shuichi. You simply being here is enough to help me feel better again."
Shuichi chuckled at the sweet remark. Everyone was chatting about Kaito getting better, but Maki was pouting in the corner. Before she started dating Kaito, she felt Shuichi had some weird infatuation with him. And if there was one thing about Maki, she didn't like to share.
Sick and tired of her attention being robbed once more, she stormed out of the hospital room. Kaito turned his head.
"Maki?"
Maki walked past a nurse with fiery auburn hair and a fit body. She then sat on one of the lobby chairs with her arms crossed. While she was blowing off some steam, the nurse shot her a dirty look.
Maki stared her down, not really wanting any conflict. "Can I help you?" She spoke.
The nurse huffed, and began to approach her. "I heard about you, Miss Harukawa. And I don't want you stepping foot in his hospital again." She then began to walk away, nothing but the sound of her shoes hitting the tiled floor of the hospital.
"What do you know about me?" Maki said, her fiery red eyes narrowing at the beautiful woman.
The nurse looked back.
"Excuse me?"
Maki stood up from the chair, her fist clenched as she continued to stare down the young nurse.
"I said what do you know about me."
The nurse returned the favor by shooting an even nastier look at her. "You killed my brother."
"I beg your pardon?" Maki asked, snapping out of her intimating position.
"Taro Yadashi. He was the vice principal of Hopes Peak Academy."
Maki's eyes widened. "Hopes Peak Academy? I used to go there..."
The nurse looked her up and down, her gaze growing more frightful. "I heard. And I heard you threatened to kill his dad's friend's son, Kokichi Ouma."
Maki's brows furrowed. "Kokichi Ouma." She muttered under her breath.
"Yes, him. The one who threatened to reveal your secret talent as an assassin. My brother went to middle school with Ouma. When he reported your violent threats, he tried to confront you. But as always, you retreated to violence."
"Look, my boyfriend is currently suffering from lung cancer. I don't need you to tell a story that was written by someone else."
A faint smirk appeared on the nurse's lips. "Well, sorry about Kaito, but I suggest you let his little friends take care of him while you're out there dropping bodies, per usual."
Maki wanted to say something, but couldn't. She knew if she elaborated any further, she'd have no choice but to get physical. The nurse smirked at the fact that fact that she couldn't speak, and just walked off. A smug smile plastered on her cherry-red lips.
Maki rushed back into the room. "Kaede, I need to talk to you. Shuichi, take care of Kaito." Before Kaede could speak, she was immediately pulled into the front of the hospital.
