Maki sat next to Kaito's bed watching the rise and fall of his chest. He looked like an angel resting on a bed of clouds, but Maki was worried about the day he'd become one.
She looked at the poem, then back at Kaito. "I love you." She muttered.
Kaito's eyes slowly opened. "Hm?"
"I love you, okay? Don't forget it."
Kaito kissed Maki's hand. "I love you more."
"My sweet, pretty girl."Maki rubbed his cheek. The beeping of the heart monitor and the sound of Kaito's soft, steady breathing gave Maki a sense of comfort. "I don't wanna die," Kaito said.
Maki's firey red eyes expanded. "Hm?"
"I don't wanna die," Kaito repeated. "I don't wanna be at this hospital anymore. I don't want to rely on doctors and nurses to keep me alive. I don't wanna take chemo. I'm so fucking tired of this." He began to shout.Maki felt her heart shatter. The brave, fearless Kaito Momota was scared of dying. "Baby, I'm just as tired as you are. But you need to be brave." Maki sighed. "I just wish—"
Kaito put a hand on Maki's lap. He knew what she was gonna say. "Maki, don't even bother wishing anymore. I'm gonna die, and there's nothing I can do about it."
"You're not gonna die, for fuck's sake. You're gonna live, and you're gonna keep fighting. Stop saying stupid shit that'll get us worked up, and just accept it. You're a legend. You can't die. And you won't." Maki sounded like she was on the verge of tears.
And she was.
Maki dropped to the ground and sobbed. Kaito sighed and sat up. "It's okay, baby. I'll keep fighting for you."
But the truth is Kaito couldn't continue the fight. He didn't wanna continue a battle he couldn't finish.
Maki just rested on Kaito's lap. Letting nothing but her tears and the feeling of Kaito's hands rubbing her back soothe her to sleep.
